Ghiberti's Gates of Paradise panels - restoration status update?
I will be in Florence in a few weeks (yay!), and I'm wondering about the status of the restoration of the original panels of the Ghiberti's Gates of Paradise doors. In February, Rick Steves had an article about Italy in the newspaper, and this bit caught my eye
"At Florence's Duomo Museum, the restoration of the original panels of Ghiberti's Gates of Paradise is wrapping up. The famous panels are being reinserted in their door frames and should be back on display for a formal inauguration on June 24, 2012, the feast day of Florence's patron saint, John the Baptist."
Does anyone know if they are on schedule for this?

It is my understanding that the panels will remain in the Museo del Opera del Duomo. The last time we were there, they were displayed on the ground floor of that museum which is a very worthwhile place to visit.

The doors had been removed for restoration but were always going to be returned to the museum. As far as I can determine, June 24th is still the date for the ceremony. If you're staying in a hotel in Florence, you could email and ask if they have more current info.

I heard a piece on the radio about this. There was a press conference yesterday in Rome announcing the doors would go on public display September 8th of this year. I'll see if i can find anything on google.

Just ran across an article from last week on Ansa.it the opening will be Sept 8 and I assume it has opened.
I mention this because sometimes the exact date of an opening in Italy can be more fluid
