Getting to Venice
We will be at Disneyland Paris in a few weeks and have 2 extra days before we have to be in Venice. My question is, what are some recommendations??
Currently, I’m thinking of heading to Dijon for 2 days and see some Roman ruins in Alesia on the way and also Autun. To get to Venice, we would train to Lyon and flying from there, My wife wants to visit Colmar, as she likes that “small town” thing, which we would probably have to fly out of Switzerland, right? Any suggestions would be appreciated. |
For my opinion the best choice will be Switzerland, Geneva. Beautiful place for 2 days.

Check out Vezelay too - remarkably pristine medieval village on a hill with a sumptuous basilica that in medieval days was a thriving pilgrimage mecca because of the town's venerated holy relic - when the relic proved to be a fake the pilgrimage trade dried up and the town slumbered along in an untouched medieval appearance. Book your French trains as early as possible at www.oui.sncf - French Railways' site for sweet discounted fares - www.seat61.com has tons of advice on doing that; general train info also BETS-European Rail Experts and www.ricksteves.com. I'd consider basing in Beaune near Dijon and a lovely smaller regional city at the epicenter of the Alsace Wine Road - drive thru world-famous vineyards and wine villages on the Route Vins d'Alsace between Dijon and Beaune. Dijon is neat but like large French cities can have hellish traffic. |
Awesome info. Thanks so much!!

There is a lot to see in Burgundy (Bourgogne) as you have been told above.
But for Roman stuff, the best places along your itinerary are Lyon and Vienne. Colmar is far away from all that. Count 2 - 2 1/2 hrs by train (3 daily connections, more with several changes and journeys up to 4 hrs). Colmar - Venice: train to Mulhouse or St. Louis - connecting bus to Basel/Mulhouse airport - easyjet flight to Venice (very low fares, but huge prices for checked in luggage!) - bus to Venice Piazzale Roma or Alilaguna boat to San Marco or so. Trains rides to Venice last 8 hrs from Colmar and 9-10 hrs from Dijon or Lyon. |
Dijon does however have a direct overnight train to Venice (www.thello.com) leaving at 9:30 pm and getting in early in morning - ultimate time daylight time saver.
