Getting to the airport in Naples
 

I will be staying at a hotel in Cava dei Tirreni which is about 10km from Salerno in late May. My flight home leaves at around 1:30 in the afternoon on a Friday. I was planning on hiring a private driver & leaving for the airport at 8 or so on Friday morning for which should be about a 50 minute trip. Is this a safe plan-I would hate to miss my flight. Or would I be better off spending the last night in a hotel near the airport?

With a 1:30 flight, you can easily hire a driver that can get you hours before your flight. I don't think you need to leave at 08.00 . With an afternoon flight, this is easy - no worries.

There are some bus options from Salerno. You can see from the schedule times how long it takes to reach the airport (even with stops).

Thanks for the information. As my Italian is limited, I am leaning more towards going with a taxi or limo service. Do you have any recommendations?

There are set fees for taxis (you have to request it before entering the cab and get a slip) so limos stay in the same price range. It's around 120€ from the airport. I'll see if I can find the list.

Beware though!

Those rates, set by the Naples city authorities, are ONLY for taxis they themselves licence...

And whilst they'd apply FROM the airport TO Cava dei Tirreni, you'd pay differently with one based anywhere on the AC.... where tariffs reflect their short season!

My own choice would be to take a train from Cava's station to Naples - just over an hour and, after the recent price rise, €4.10.....

("Napoli P.Za Garibaldi" is the part of the main station complex used by Metro and Circumvesuviana services!)

... and then travel up to the airport either by taxi, or with the €3 Alibus, taking some 15 / 20 minutes...

You'd save €100 or so - with the fallback of calling a taxi from Vietri sul Mare or Salerno if, on the day, the trains weren't running for any reason!

I will take your advice, Peter, et al. & take an early train from Cava dei Tirreni & then by bus or taxi to the airport.

On an earlier leg of the trip, I'll need to get from Pompeii to Cava dei Tirreni. I'm planning on taking a Trenitalia train. Am I correct that there are two stations in Pompeii-one for Trenitalia & the other for the Circumvesuviano local?

There are multiple stations in Pompei, not just two. If you are taking Trenitalia, you will be about a mile walk from Pompeii.

You'd arrive at the station marked as "Pompei" in red - on the track that crosses the page horizontally - and might prefer to either walk through to the nearer Piazza Anfiteatro entrance, or use your ticket on any of the buses headed westwards to the main one?

... you'd be LEAVING from the station marked as "Pompei" in red - on the track that crosses the page horizontally...

So either end your visit at the Piazza Anfiteatro end of the site, or use your UnicoCampania ticket on any of the buses headed eastwards from the main one to the station!

Not sure how long it takes but, from any of several stops, you might instead take the CSTP bus number 4 all the way to Cava?

Thanks again, Peter & kybourbon. The bus all the way would seem to be the easiest, but also longer than the train.

Unless less a good deal sprightlier than me, easy may well be what you want after a few hours at Pompeii!
