? getting to Lyon 3rd try
 

Hi all,

I'll be heading NB on the A48 out of Grenoble, headed to Lyon.

Viamichelin, Mappy and maps.google all tell me to enter the A43 by following the signs LA-TOUR-DU-PIN/CHAMBERY/GENEVA.

These are all East of the A48.

I want to go NW.

Any advice from those who have done this route?

I can only remember the A43 from Chambery to Lyons.

There's absolutely no doubt, though, that on the A 43, the A43/A48 junction westbound is signed 'Lyon' (I was doing the navigating at that point).

BUT the intersection isn't a pure motorway-to-motorway junction on the A48. There's a few hundred yards of non-limited access road after the 'motorway rules cease to apply' sign on the A48. I IMAGINE the sign at the end of the A48 says 'A43 La Tour-Chambery-Geneve/Lyon',with an arrow pointing straight ahead - then a hundred yards on there's a left-pointing sign saying 'Lyon' and a right-pointing sign saying 'Geneve'.

I SUSPECT the software's clunky here: it's tried to compress a very long sign and by dropping the last few letters has produced a complete bloody Horlicks

If you haven't got a proper, up to date, French road atlas, I'd get one for €15 at any Carrefour. Mine (this year's edition) shows the same junction configuration as the closest zoom on Google maps. Both make it clear you could practically navigate this junction blind.

In fact, you'd be more successful doing it blind than trusting the dickheads who devised the software.

North bound?

Sometimes it is better to go in the wrong direction before it becomes the correct direction. For example, the first time you are going through Lyon from Paris to Avignon, it seems like an incredible detour to go around Lyon like the signs suggest. But if you are stubborn and drive straight through Lyon on the autoroute using the Fourvière tunnel, you quickly realize the error of your ways.

Same thing is true for Atlanta.

The long route around the city is much faster than the short route through the city, even though both are Interstate Highways.

I don't know how quickly Michelin updates its site due to current road conditions and such, but most of the roads (including the Lyon-Clermont autoroute) were closed due to the big floods 2 days ago. Most of the roads have now reopened, but the towns and villages are still in ruins.
