Getting to Grancey le Chateau
Hello, I'm from Australia and am not confident in driving on the right side of the road. Does anyone know how to get to Grancey le Chateau (north of Dijon, France) by any other way than hiring a car? I am a Catholic and am wanting to get there for religious reasons. Any suggestions are welcome.

You can start your research by looking at this link to the regional bus network:

You can also use the regional train website www.ter-sncf.com but it is in French and can be tricky to figure out. I just checked and it appears that there is bus service there but I don't know how frequent it is. Since the population is only a few hundred people I would imagine whatever bus service there is will be limited.

Thanks for the links, they are a bit tricky, I'm only up to lesson 1 on learning French online. Still it is more than I was able to find by searching the net. I'm still planning my trip and hope to arrive in Paris from Australia about mid May 2012. After 2 to 3 days in Paris I will travel down to Dijon. Corsica looks very attractive so I want to go there. I'm on a budget so will be staying at convents and monasteries most of the time. Its the first time I'll be travelling on my own without a tour group but reading all the Fodorite's postings have given me a lot of courage to try this on my own.

It seems a bit tricky to go to Grancey with no car and you do need help.
First there is no direct bus nor train station in Grancey so you have to take a train + bus.
You also have to know that you won't leave from Dijon main station but from Dijon Porte Neuve station which is East of the town centre (Main station is on West side) check the map here http://tinyurl.com/77y7p2v
You'll have plenty of time since the only suitable thing is to take a TER (slow train) is at 16h26 to Is sur Tille (schedule here http://tinyurl.com/bnc9gpg) and then bus 54 at 17h02 to Grancey. schedule http://tinyurl.com/bnc9gpg check the 2nd board.
To go from Dijon station to Dijon Porte Neuve station you can either walk (1/2 hour through the historic centre or maybe 40 min with luggage) or simply take bus 3 at the back exit of the station (sortie Albert 1er and then cross the street to take it). Dijon bus is 1€ (valid for an hour), train is 5.20€ and Transco bus is about 1.50€

Congrats on your first solo trip Pelligrina and good luck to you. I believe the first link has an English language link option at the top of the page. However, often these English links only have limited use and eventually you find yourself back on a French page. If you can also mention at what time of day you'd like to take a bus to Grancey (also, weekday or weekend) and what time of day you'd like to leave from there that would be helpful. I'm assuming you'll be coming from and returning to Dijon.
Just curious about why you want to go to Grancey, if it's not too nosey to ask. Is it just because there is a convent there and it's cheap to stay? It's going to be really difficult trying to go anywhere from there using public transport if you were thinking of making any day trips from there. If you're just going there for budgetary reasons maybe you might consider a hostel in Dijon.

Thank you very, very much Coco and FMT for the info, I'll research all your good advice as soon as I finish work. The info on the buses etc is very helpful and also it is good to know about the convent at Grancey le Chateau.
To answer your question FMT, the reason I want to go to Grancey is because that is the birth place of Mother Marie Adele Garnier or Mother Mary of St Peter (1838 - 1924). She is the foundress of the Adorers of the Sacred Heart of Jesus,of Montmartre, OSB, also known colloquially as the Tyburn Nuns in London and an offshoot of this original order is actually at Montmartre. They are the sisters you see praying in the Basilica of the Sacre Coeur at Montmartre.
Mother Marie Adele did not want to return to Montmartre as it was her understanding that the message of Montmartre was universal. She died in England and her body is buried at the Motherhouse of the Tyburn Nuns in London, near Marble Arch.I suppose its quite obvious that I have a devotion to her, I have already been to her tomb, so I would love to visit Grancey and the local Church of St John the Baptist if possible. Incidently, St Bernard of Clairvaux was apparently baptised in that same church.
Please forgive me if in my enthusiasm it is appears that I am pushing my religion but that is the reason I wish to go to Grancey le Chateau.
