Getting to/from airports in Milan and Rome

Hi there,

I'm flying into Milan (Linate) and am wondering what's the easiest way to get to my hotel? It's the Linate Novotel so it's about a 10 min drive away. Should I just take a cab?

As for Rome, I'm staying quite central and flying out of FCO airport. What's the easiest way to get to the airport from there?

Thanks in advance

Easiest is always a private car service or taxi - but cheaper and almost as easy is the Leonardo Express, a dedicated airport train rolling direct from Rome Termini right into the airport with the departure halls about a 15-minute walk from the airport train station - luggage carts should be available.

Linate Novotel site says above it has free shuttles to Linate - most Novotels by airports I've stayed in also have free shuttle buses. If you can't find where to wait ask airport information.

The Novotel is 1.8 miles from the airport. Unless you are some major hurry I agree with Pal on taking the hotel free shuttle. Linate terminal area is not that big so I suspect the shuttle stop might be easily located.

You COULD e-mail the hotel directly and ask that question.

In Rome, the best train depends on exactly where you're staying. The Leonardo Express costs €14, and goes only to Termini station. If you're two or more people, and especially if you'll have to take a taxi from the station to your hotel, you might as well take a taxi all the way from the airport.

There's another train from the airport, which stops at several different stations in Rome, but not at Termini station. It costs €8. If I were staying in Trastevere, or near Campo de'Fiori, the Pantheon, the Jewish Ghetto, or Piazza Navona, I'd take this train and get off at Trastevere station. There's a tram outside the station that will take you to the northern part of Trastevere, as well as stopping near Campo de'Fiori, the Jewish Ghetto, and also not far from the other places I mentioned. If you can't walk more than five minutes with your luggage, you could take a taxi from the station.

The other stations that might be convenient, depending on where you're staying, are Ostiense and Tuscolana.

There are also private transfer services from the airport, whose prices are about the same as a taxi, sometimes even less. They will meet you in the arrivals hall, and help with your luggage. Two that I know are reliable are www.romeshuttlelimousine.com and www.romecabs.com . It's worthwhile asking them for a quote, because if it's less than the taxi, it will certainly be more convenient, and the drivers don't have the bad memory of some taxi drivers, who frequently seem to forget what the flat fare into Rome is, or who try to add extra fees that are not permitted.

The private transfer services are paid on arrival at your destination, although they ask for a credit card number, which will be charged if you don't show up and don't notify them. (This doesn't include late or cancelled flights, because they do check with the airline to see if the flight is on time.)

There are also bus transfers into central Rome, which are cheaper than the train, but take longer. Most leave you near Termini station, but SITbus also has a stop near the Vatican. There's no reason to buy tickets in advance for these buses. You can buy tickets from the driver of the next bus that's leaving when you get there.
