Getting to/from Aeolians?

We are planning a trip to Sicily for late June/early July, including 3 nights on Salina, and I was hoping to benefit from some advice on getting there and back.

The night before we will be in Cefalu. It seems the ferry from Cefalu to the Aeolians no longer runs, right? I guess in that case I guess we should head down the coast to pick up the ferry in Milazzo. Would it be noticeably easier to do that by train or with a rental car? (We plan to have a rental car for part of the trip, but we are considering different options for when to drop it off).

Do we need ferry tickets in advance in late June/early July? We were planning to use a car transfer from Milazzo to Taormina-- does anyone have suggestions for which one to use and when to book it?

I guess another possibility would be to keep our rental car, and either try to bring it over to Salina or park it in Milazzo, but wasn't sure that made sense?

thanks for any wisdom/advice you can share!

I spent 5 days in Liapri and visited other islands from there. One day I took a hydrofoil over to Salina, rented a car for the day and drove all around the island.

I believe Salina is one of the islands without car restrictions during the summer, but check. To bring a car on to Lipari, you must be staying for a week or more. However, in Lipari the summer bus scedule is frequent enoungh that you would not need or want a car.

I think it depends on the size of your group and how much luggage is involved which would be more convenient between Cefalu and Milazzo, car or train. You could turn the car in in Milazzo, go to Salina, then use a car service to Taormina. I did the reverse. I had dropped my car on Ortigia, trained to Taormina, and used New Life Services private driver to Milazzo. It was 90E three yrs ago for just me traveling solo. I was completely happy with their service. On time, professional, and Christian even called while we were enroute to Milazzo to ensure everything was satisfactory.

Get your pricing for the various options for your group and do the math.

If You decide to ferry your car to Salina, I would definitely make advance reservations during the peak months for the Aeolians.

Buon viaggio!
