Go to St John's Wood station, and it's a short walk. Use streetmap.co.uk for exact location.

I can't help you with direction, but the first time I went to London with a friend, she insisted we find ABbey Rd. Somehow we did find it. It was a little out of the way (if I remember correctly), but not that big of a deal. ANd we did take photos crossing the street.

Apparently Abbey Road street signs get knicked routinely so look for street without street signs on it!

If you're using the Tube to get to Abbey Road from Marble Arch , take the Central Line to go one stop to Bond Street. You would then transfer to the Jubilee Line and go 2 stops to St. John's Wood. ( St. John's Wood is in Zone Two, so be sure to buy an extension if you already have a Zone One travelcard. )
There's a tiny Beatles' souvenir shop on Finchley Road, right outside the St. John's Wood Tube station.
Cross Finchley Road and walk up Grove End Road until you get to Abbey Road.
Abbey Road is heavily trafficed , but I think motorists who frequently drive in that area are used to tourists trying to snap a pic in THE zebra crossing.
The Abbey Road Studios are just past the zebra crossing. At one time the powers that be at Abbey Road Studios didn't mind if Beatles' fans graffitied the wall in front of the studio, but I read somewhere this is no longer allowed.

Or you could take the 189 bus from Oxford Street. It stops on Abbey Road.

Do you know there's a webcam on Abbey Road?

If you and your granddaughter can alert the folks back home as to when you'll be there, you can wave to them when you cross the street.
