Getting in/out Annecy-parking? Stay in town or on lake?

Struggling where to base for our 5 nights in the area. Visiting end of September - not this year! I would like to wander around Annecy for a day, tour the lake, visit Chamonix/cable car to Aiguille du Midi and the
Gorges du Fier.

I like the idea of staying in or within walking distance to Annecy to avoid having to drive to and from dinner. How diffcult is driving in and out of Annecy? Parking, if my accommodation doesn't have private parking?

Any recommendations for a town to stay in other than Annecy?

Appreciate any feedback - thank you.

We stayed at the Ibis in Annecy last year. A lot of people don't care for the Ibis chain. We stay in them often in our annual 5 week vacation in France (mostly). We find them to be clean and comfortable and within our budget. Besides, we use them for sleeping only, as we leave in the morning and don't return until late afternoon/early evening.

We had a room on the canal with a tiny balcony you could step out on. We were there on market day. You could look to the left from the balcony and the market was a minute away. Everything is within easy walking distance from the hotel.

There also was a parking garage next door with reduced rates for Ibis guests. After the day workers left, there was always plenty of parking. But we were able to park before they left too.

We enjoyed going to Chamonix and Mont Blanc as well as the boat ride.

Correction

When you look to the right you could see the market.

We also like the Ibis in central Annecy - fairly car-friendly considering the location.

I think Annecy is a good choice for a town to stay in. I helped a girlfriend plan a couple days there on her last europe trip. sorry don't know details I just know she went there, found a hotel after she arrived, and enjoyed her stay.
