Getting from Trastavere to Vatican
 

What is the best way to get from Trastevere to the Vatican (or vice versa). I will be staying in an apartment near the Vatican, close to metro and bus stops. I would like to visit the Trastevere.

What would be the best way to go between the two areas?

Trastevere is an easy 15-20 minute walk along the Tiber River directly from in front in of the Vatican right into the heart of Trastevere. I am not sure about bus and Metro stops, but is an enjoyable walk.

It depends on where you are staying near the Vatican.

simply walk, if able

there are several routes, along the Tiber, or the pleasant back streets

Numerous buses run along the banks of the Tiber. One way along the west bank going towards Trastevre, and the east back headed back. Metro won't get you near Trastevere.

Depending on where you're staying the #23 bus may be you best bet as it goes all the way around the Vatican by the Museum entrance.

I should have known to be more specific. I will be in Aurelio, near the A line metro, one stop from the Vatican stop. I know--this is not "near the vatican", but I was navigating (in my head) from the Vatican Museum metro stop.

One of the places I will go in Trastevere is a gluten-free pizza and pastry shop that is near the Trastevere Station (200 meters from the station).

When I use a public transportation website, I get 2 busses and one tram. Really! Isn't there a way to take the subway to, lets say, Termini, and hop some kind of line that goes to the Trastevere Station?

I think it's too far to walk from the Vatican Museum stop to Trastevere station, but is there a way to cut down from 2 busses and a tram??

The 23 bus might do it. It is really a challenge for me to navigate the transit websites and figure any of this out.

If you're near the Metro A stop *Valle* Aurelia, the FR3 regional train goes from there to Roma Trastevere station; it's the third stop.

Take the train from Valle Aurelia (not the metro) as Zerlina said. That would be fastest and most convenient.

While it may seem simple to some, so me, the public transit in Rome is a bit daunting. I've ridden the metro there, but never anything else. Reading and understanding maps and even bus schedules is hard for me. So thanks for the help.

Once you get the hang of the various modes of public transportation in Rome, it's easy especially if you have a transport pass or the Roma Pass with it's 3 day transport pass and can hop any type of transportation with it. This thread explains the buses in Rome (complete with pictures) and how to read the signs at the bus stops. In areas like Trastevere where normal buses can't go, there are small electric buses.

The train from Valle Aurelia is a very nice direct shot....if it comes....when it comes.....the time you spend staring at your foot on the platform is best used just WALKING. I live over there and walk home from Trastevere all the time. The bus from Piazza Risorgimento that goes there never comes either.

To run my gluten-free errand from my apartment to the shop Le Ben in Trastavere, on foot, would be over 3 miles, one way. DH & I have physical limitations and would rather save our post-op, re-habbed bodies for pursuits other than a grocery run.

That said, I appreciate the help, and will just have to figure out transportation to save the joints.

Does the Roma Pass cover local trains like the one being discussed here?
