Getting from Sorrento to Ischia

I will be in Sorrento in October and very much wanted to day trip to Ischia. I checked the Alilauro schedule but am not certain I am translating correctly. Does anyone know if the ferries will run in October?

kybourbon Jul 16th, 2013 06:30 AM

The schedule on their website is for 4/15/13 to 9/30/13. Ferries will run from Naples if they aren't from Sorrento.

Thank you. We will not be in Naples so that will not work. Only in Sorrento for a day. I will check the website again in a few weeks.

I am staying in Sorrento in September. I want to take a day trip to Ischia too. Please post any information you find out.

I emailed Orari E Tariffe ferry company to find out their schedule and the company hasn't returned my request.

You may not find a formal listing. But there are boats from Sorrento to Ischia. There are also boats from Positano to Ischia...or there used to be.

Just ask when you arrive if you can't find anything beforehand.

Thank you, Can you let us know how long the ferry ride is from Sorrento to Ischia.

It's on my post above. You can see the ferry departs Sorrento at 9:30 and arrives Ischia at 10:10. If you click to purchase after end of Sept., you will get a message that the route is not available.

It takes about 60-70 minutes...a bit more on the larger car ferries...a bit less if you're on a hydrofoil.

You guys are being so nice. Good for all of you.

Nice, if perhaps confusing?

Based on what I've seen during 10 years of living on the island...

- there are no car ferries between Sorrento and Ischia

- the direct Alilauro hydrofoil usually ends just after the All Saints/All Souls holiday, at the start of November, with the same out and back times as shown currently. However, for the first time, this year they began the season by only running it 3 or 4 times per week (not going "daily" until late May, or June 1st) and could very well revert to that pattern from October 1st onwards... no news as yet, so keep watching on:

http://www.alilauro.it/orari-e-tarif...te_group_id=13

(It's been our experience that Alilauro's stated journey times are a little on the optimistic side! Apparently takes 5 minutes longer on the way back... uphill, perhaps?)

- the Alicost service that's currently running daily to Ischia (from Salerno via Positano, Amalfi and Capri) usually changes around September 12th/14th - at the end of the Italian school holidays - after when it runs only as far as Capri!!

..........................

If only in Sorrento for a cruiseship stop, and moving on, do bear in mind you'll possibly have only that one chance to get back?

But if thinking coming from Sorrento via Naples, or vice versa, this may be handy...

Been there, done that. Really wanted to see Ischia.

Just a warning for you!

Loads of people come over from Sorrento and make it back home with no problems... but their hotels aren't going to sail away!

For some idea of what's likely to be happening, of things to do and see, etc etc, you might try this - the October 2012 edition of the island's (mostly bilingual) visitor magazine:

... and photos of mine from that month over the years:

Thanks, Peter. I was referring to the car ferries from Naples.

Ischia is lovely and interesting and large. If you are going for the day get on the bus which runs from il Porto to Sant'Angelo, get off in sant angelo walk around the town, get back on the next bus, get off in Lacco Ameno, if you still have time you can check out Casamicciola but if you are running short go back to il Porto walk around town until your ferry is ready to leave. I would never send anyone to Capri after having visited Ischia. It is surely a place I will visit again and stay for at least a week next time. We took the only hydrofoil from Ischia to Sorrento and I think it took 50 mins there are many ferries that run to Naples and back and you can then catch the train to Sorrento if you get stuck.
