getting from Rome to Siena

We are going to Rome for 8 nights and I would like to do a day trip somewhere...possibly Siena. It takes 3 hours to go from Rome to Siena via train. Is there a quicker way...such as by bus? I have tried to look at Sita...but the site is in Italian.

Try Orvieto (1 hr). Sienna is just too far for a daytrip.

I have the same question, however, my trip from Rome to Siena will be as a destination, not a day trip. Does anyone have more input? Thanks!

The fastest connection is 3 hours and that's by train AND bus combo. I tend to agree that you might look elsewhere for a day-trip destination. If not Orvieto then Tivoli, Ostica Antica, etc.

Is Orvieto interesting enough to spend a day or would you pair it with another city...such as Montepulciano or Narni which are on the train route?

I think it is for most people, but others may have another opinion.

check http://www.sena.it/ENG/activenews.as...FLQIIC08230750
for bus schedule from Rome or http://www.sena.it/index_e.htm for the basic offerings.

Thanks. That website was helpful. I am still not sure what to do.

We drove from Rome to Sienna (destination) last July. Its a pretty drive, stopped in Orvieto (spent a good 4 hours) and loved the little town. Take time to meander down all the little side streets and explore. Sienna is too far for a day trip.
