getting from Rome to Ostia Antica
 

Hi-
My wife and I are going on honeymoon to Italy in 2 weeks.

We'd like to see Ostia Antica, and I was wondering if a CIS ticket (the weekly bus/metro ticket) will work for our trip there - I understand that a normal 1 euro metro ticket will work, so I figure that the CIS will work the same?

Dear Alan,

You are right. The weekly ticket will work on Lido Train which goes to Ostia. The Train starts from Piramide Stop of Metro Line B.

And the metro stop is smack by the entrance to the ruined old port of Rome - one of the most formidable archaeological sites in Italy IMO

And to continue with what Palenque said, when you leave the train, cross the bridge over the highway. Walk a couple of blocks to the town, the park is to your left. It is often best to get there in the mornings and take a picnic lunch with you. Also, weekdays are better than weekends, but it is never really crowded.

Also, if you are there in the summer, there are plays put on in the amphitheater on Friday evenings.

Oh, and as to the train, going to Ostia, transfer from the metro at Piramide, you get your pick of seats. On the return trip I have found it best to transfer back to the metro at either Eur or Basilica S. Paolo, as the Piramide stop is a major intersection of trains, metro and buses.

And the Basilica S Paolo to me is an incredible sight and experience so it's easy to incorporate this major religious venue in a day out in Ostia Antica.

I do wonder if the huge Gypsy camp i saw on this metro line to Ostia several years ago is still there - it was sprawling and appalling as well to me.

we found the restaurant at ostia quite reasonable, but there are other better choices, according to a recent thread - try searching this forum for restaurants at ostia antica. and there is a nice little bar for a sit down just by the station.

Pal - i don't remember seeing that gypsy site but the graffiti is pretty bad - or if you are of that sort of turn of mind, good. I'm sorry we didn't know about the Basilica S Paolo.

We went to Ostia Antica in October. The only recommendation I can make is to head back to Rome either before or after the rush hour. The train and metro was packed - not one more body could fit in on the metro. We could not get on 3 metros and did manage to get on the 4th one.

We ate lunch at the cafe sitting outdoors at the tables. The food was okay and a nice rest.

Ostia Antica is not to be missed.

though all the blossom on my lovely ornamental plum got knocked off by last week's downpour.

as this is a travel website, rather than a gardening one, i will take the time to add that april and May are excellent times for visiting Cornwall. though the weather can be mixed, rain is often swiftly followed by sunshine, and the gardens look lovely. the bluebells are out now, along with the tulips rhododenrons, and the hedgerows and apple-blossom are gorgeous.

Unfortunately the bookstore at Ostia Antica is quite a distance into the site, which is a large one. The basic map you get at the entrance does not have much information and the buildings have very few signs

When you catch the train at the Piramide stop, take some time to check out the pyramid of Caius Cestius and the Protestant cemetery.
