Getting from Rome to Amalfi Coast & Day Trips
 

Hi everyone!

Thanks to all the help from this forum we have figured out our July honeymoon!

We booked our flights for approx. $1200 each, so not TOO bad. We're flying into and out of Rome. I believe we arrive around 10 am or so...

Once we get there we need to get down to the Amalfi Coast where we're staying for the first week. We're staying at the Appartamento Rodolfo which is about 3km from Amalfi and 12km from Positano. We hope it's a good spot!

Can anyone help us with the best way to get there from Rome? I've read suggestions that say to take the train to Salerno and then a bus or ferry? Also, what are the best day trips to do while in Amalfi? Best beaches? Any other suggestions?

After a week in Amalfi we're heading to Rome and staying in Trastevere for a week.

Are there any day trips we can take from Rome? Is Orvieto too far?

Anyways, any further suggestions for our trip would be great!!

Suggested day trips on the A.C.
-Obviously Amalfi-Ravello; and Positano-Sorrento.
-Pompeii.
-Capri.
-Paestum(on my to do list for our second visit to the area).
From Rome:
-Ostia antica.
-Orvieto(another high priority for our next visit).

You can go Rome-Salerno and then take the SITA bus to amalfi and your apartment; or ferry to Amalfi and bus to your apartment.You will take a lot of SITA buses in your stay!.
those buses and the fferries are the only transportation you will need.

How do the SITA busses work? Can you buy a pass? Would it be worth it for us to do this for our week in Amalfi?

Yes,you can buy a pass,(best option I think).With the location of your apartment,you will take the SITA buses many times a day.I remember there are a couple of places that sell the passes in Amalfi,at piazza Flavio Giogia(where all buses start and stop).

If you visit Pompeii while on the Amalfi Coast portion of your trip, then I would choose a different day trip out of Rome other than Ostia Antica.

I did a tirp to Tivoli to see Hadrian's Villa and Villa d' Este (with all the fountains). I was thrilled with this day trip and so glad I went. Highly recommend! Make sure the fountains are running when you go. Lately there were some reports of most of them being under repair and I haven't heard from any Fodorites who have visited recently.

We took the train from Rome to Salerno last Sept. Easy ride and there is a ferry to Amalfi a few blocks from the train station. Problem is, if the seas are rough, the ferries don't run. However, you can catch the bus to Amalfi from the bus stop in front of the ferry area. Those buses get awfully crowded, but they may have luggage storage nderneath.

You'll love Trastevere! We vrbo'd there and the apts were great and the location was perfect. In fact, we'll going back in October. Highly recommend the Alle Fratte di Trastevere Restaurant. The "Otto" on Viale Trastevere gets you to Torre Argentina where you can pick up a bus to anywhere in the city. The H and 3 also run this road and are very convenient. They say Rome is walkable (translate: exhausting), but we had the monthly pass and probably would have spent the same cost in individual ticktes in the first week.

We were in Rome for a month and took many day trips by bus/metro train. Don't miss Ostia Antica and Villa D'Este. And Paestum while your'e on the Amalfi Coast.
