getting from rail station to hotel centro in rome
 

Our travel agent has booked us at this hotel. Does anyone know how far this is from the station and what would be the best way of getting there? It looks from a (not-to-scale) map I have that it is a bit too far to walk upon arriving with luggage, but not far enough to make a decent cab ride. The last thing I want is for our first experience in rome to be a screaming match with a driver who has waited an hour in the queue to pick up a $3 fare. (I don't speak Italian but I'm sure the sentiment would be obvious!.)Thanks in advance for any help everyone.

sorry, me again. After asking the question, I then did a search for people's comments on the Centro as a venue and came up with nada. Maybe its's new or changed it's name, so for the purposes of my original question, it's address is Via Firenze 12. Thanks again in anticipation.

Just looked at a map and I think it would be walkable with one carry-on by an average person (I'm 61 and I would do it), but not with more luggage probably.

We stayed in a hotel very close to there. We walked with our luggage with no problem -but we travel light. I would suggest calling your travel agent and asking. One other thing you could do is have one person wait at the station with part of your luggage and one go to the hotel-check in- and then go back to the station for the other person and rest of luggage. There is also luggage storage. Store what you can't carry and go back for the rest. It really is a very short walk. I think you will find this area of Rome great for getting around.

I would estimate it to be no more than 300-400 yards. Not as far as you might have to walk withIN some large airports! *If* you're arriving on the Airport Train whose track is *way down* from the front of the station it will be ~1500m.<BR> I used the online ATAC map to find the location of Via Firenze 12 and my large fold-out map of Rome, then I scaled the route I would walk (it came out to 1600m on my smaller Streetwise Map).<BR> Try this if you coming in on the Airport Train: At the head of the track there is a staircase, one person stays with the luggage while the other goes down and outside. There is a small Taxi Stand there, if there are taxis waiting you're home free:). Or just go to the Stand and wait for a taxi, it's a busy street (Via Giovanni Giolitti) you could probably hail one passing-by from the Stand. Or wait until someone gets dropped-off.<BR> It's a one-way street and the driver would have to turn around to head to your hotel, that and he didn't have to wait in the long queue in front of the station should make this fare <BR>acceptable I would think:). <BR> Also you could walk down the tracks (don't take the moving walkway down 1 level) towards the front to the station. Past the half-way point they will be a sign &quot;Assistenza Clienti&quot; go thru that doorway and then the exit onto Via G. Giolitti. Walk along the sidewalk and you will find a taxi parked along there. <BR>Regards, Walter

I agree with the above, especially in Rome..SPLURGE this ONE time in your life and get a taxi..you can walk BACK when you're ready to leave town

thanks to all who responded - I appreciate the efforts that people go to. For Bootman4U, again thanks for the response, but I think you misunderstood - it's not a question of &quot;splurging&quot; or not on a taxi. I'd happily pay whatever the price, its just that I've had some bad experinces where drivers really get upset at being asked to go on a short journey, and such situations have an increased likelihood of occurring if I don't know whether my destination is 500 yards or 5 miles away.
