It appears there are many tickets similar to the Bayern ticket, and those are valid in different areas.

Yes. always a Land (federal state). On a weekend day there is a similar ticket (Wochenendticket) for 33 E valid for all of Germany during a day.

>If one is moving north from Salzburg to Frankfurt over the course of 6 days, could one purchase daily tickets in those areas and cover all of your travel for 27 euros a day?

Yes, depending on your route - if you go to Nuremberg and so on, Bavaria streches almost to the eastern suburbs of Frankfurt. The last station in Bavaria is Kahl (Main), from there it only costsa few Euro to Frankfurt.

Be aware that there are a few downsides to Laender or Schoenes Wochenende tickets for long journeys:
1. The trains stop virtually everywhere, turning, for example, a three hour trip on a regular train (IC/EC) into a 4.5 hour ride.
2. Local trains have few services--no restaurant or railbar. So, bring your own food/beverage
3. Second class has lots of student groups--at least on the ones we've taken. Its fun to watch them for a bit of time, but it may not be to your liking.

For short trips like Salzburg-Munich or Munich to Fuessen, the BayernKarte is fine. I'd hesitate to take a local train from, say, Salzburg to Kahl, near Frankfurt, where a five hour journey with two changes on a faster train becomes 8 hours or more with three to five changes on local trains.

I was on the Bahn website, but I cannot find what towns are covered by the Bayern Pass. Any help?

Thank you for the link to the Bavarian map. I have opened it, enlarged it and pasted it all together. It works!
