Getting from Italy to Croatia
 

HI

we are spending a week in Tuscany, then thinking about moving on to Croatia -- Istria and a travel down the coast (have been to Croatia already, so not heading any farther south than Trogir)

every option for getting to Croatia from Italy seems insanely expensive -- - plane flights from Florence or Pisa to Split or Pula are $600 each, and trains are crazy expensive, etc.

we are going mid September.

Any suggestions?

Train from Florence to Venice. Ferry from Venice to Rovinj or Porec. Have fun.

There are overnight ferries from Ancona to Split and Zadar.

For Istria, you can get a train to Trieste, then a bus. Italian trains are definitely not expensive if you buy tickets in Italy.

We are thinking of taking the ferry from Bari to Dubrovnik. (Patrick's report from a few years ago has inspired us).

There is also the AZZURRA (www.azzurraline.com) which in previous seasons has run from Bari to Dubrovnik and also to Kotor. Schedules for 2009 don't seem to be available yet.

We took the ferry from Bari to Dubrovnik last March and are taking it again this coming March. Nice crossing, no problems at all. Our thanks to Neo Patrick, Stu T and Geoffl-lamer for their input, you really helped.

I would look into taking the ferry from Ancona to Split and going north to Istria from there.

The schedules for Jadrolinija can be seen on their website and now you can buy ferry tickets from them.

If you do decide NOT to take the ferry, but the train/bus option, please don't just use Trieste as a place to switch over modes of transport-it is a superb destination with much see, do and enjoy. Very different from other Italian cities (well, each one is unique, but Trieste is really distinct.)

Sorry, I don't have a response to your question, but I do have a question for you - I hope you don't mind! I noticed in the trip report that you filed in 2006 that you stayed in the Magic House in Dubrovnik. That's one of the options that I'm considering for an upcoming trip to Croatia. Do you recall whether you had to climb a lot of stairs to get there? I'd really appreciate your comments on that (or anything else about the Magic House).
