Getting from Dublin to Yeovil
Hi. I'll be traveling from Dublin, Ireland to Yeovil, England (south of Bristol). What is the best way to get from Dublin to England/Wales? A ferry? Are there trains that travel that distance? Or fly from Dublin to London then take a train? Cost is a moderate concern, time isn't. Thanks.

Just posted to your other thread re the $/£/€
How do you plan on getting around in Somerset?? The area around Yeovil is pretty rural. You can fly from DUB to BRS and then a bus to Bristol Temple Meads and a train to Yeovil -- depending on the train you book it will take 90 mins to 2.5 hours. |
The time and hassle of getting to the airport, checking in, exiting another airport, etc. must be factored in versus a ferry. Don't forget you will probably need an ESTA visa thingie to enter GB from Dublin.

Hi. I have an ETA visa. Time isn't an issue but hassle is. Do you recommend a ferry then bus/train?
|
While in Yeovil I figure walk/bus/get rides, etc. I'll be staying at the same place for a month and aren't really concerned about doing much long distance traveling while there.
|
Flying can be a hassle and the overall time can be quite long, but it’s going to be a lot easier than the ferry to Holyhead and then a long train ride changing at least twice which will take all day.
The visa waiver is an ETA. The ESTA is the scheme for inbound visitors to the US. |

Traveling between Dublin and Bristol . . . There is no ferry to anywhere convenient to Yeovil. Simply not practical. The ferry options are Dublin to far NW Wales at Holyhead, or Rosslare (100 miles south of Dublin) to Fishguard in far western Wales. Holyhead is about a 300 mile drive or 7 hour train ride with transfers to Yeovil. Fishguard is closer but longer travel times. Nope, not realistic. Fly. Heck -- even flying to LHR would make more sense - though Bristol would be better. Curious what your plans are for a month in Yeovil -- unless it is retreat or something like that. |
Another flying option would be to Exeter. 20 minute bus ride to Exeter St Davids station and an hourly service to Yeovil taking just over an hour. Probably a bit quicker and cheaper than Bristol, although the flights could counter that on cost.

I'm going on a cultural exchange program at the Brympton House.
Flying seems like the best option, Dublin to Bristol then train/bus to Yeovil. The fares seem fairly cheap. Though if i could get to Yeovil from Dublin exclusively by train I'd do it. Some of the most fun i had last summer in Europe was on the train rides. |
Flying seems like the cheapest, quickest, and easiest travel option.

Hello. thanks for the suggestions.
I flew Aer Lingus from Dublin to Bristol then took a train to Yeovil. Flight was cheap enough, checking a bag cost double the ticket. On the return I was in SW Scotland so I took a train to Liverpool then flew Ryanair to Dublin. Again, checking a bag tripled the cost of the flight. Aer Lingus was ok. Ryanair was not. the worst experience i've ever had flying. and this includes flying Spirit here in America. Doing it over again i would take a ferry to and from. would have been cheaper and with much less hassle. And holy God are the trains in the UK expensive. Wow! |
Between overbearing security to logistics to cancellations and general chaos, any use of air travel to get anywhere is a horror show. I recall your inquiry in June and honestly was hoping you would choose another option for precisely the reasons you stated. Your experience is typical, and intolerable. Take the ferry and trains and kick back and relax. No matter how long it takes.

on the way to Yeovil from Dublin I determined that the cost of the ferry to Holyhead plus the cost of the train from Holyhead to Yeovil was triple the cost of flying to Bristol plus the train to Yeovil so I flew. Aer Lingus was ok. On the way back I had to travel from Mallaig, Scotland to Dublin in a relatively short period of time so i decided to take a train from Mallaig to Liverpool (by way of Glasgow, Dumfries, and Carlisle) then fly to Dublin. This saved me money but knowing now the hassle that Ryanair is i would have taken the time and spent the money to go to Holyhead then get a ferry from there.
I know people in IR/UK like the idea of having cheap airlines like Ryanair and Aer Lingus to fly but as one guy told me, taking those cheap airlines comes at a price of eating shit the whole way. |
Life, and travel, is a sh*t sandwich...take a bite, or starve.

I think a little of both is the way to go.

Another option would by fly Dublin-Southampton, then train from the airport. I think you'd need to change at Salisbury.
