getting from Cadiz to Seville

We will be on a cruis that stops in Cadiz. Is it possible to travel to Seville and back on your own? Is it worth the trip or should we stay in Cadiz. What's to see in Cadiz?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

there are so many quaint villages near there, perhaps save sevilla for another time if you only have the day.

I'll second licasanova. Don't waste what little time you have traveling to Sevilla only to spend a few hours in a city that requires several days. Enjoy the area around Cadiz. You'll find it interesting, and a little more relaxing.

I haven't mentioned how long you'll be in Cadiz. If it's a short time, stay where you are and look around. It takes about two hours via train to Sevilla and the same for returning. That means half of the day will be travelling.

If you want to check things around Cadiz, take the small boat which crosses the bay to El Puerto de Santa Maria. The boat ride is cheap and fast, plus it's nice. Puerto itself is worth looking and the area is great for lunch. There's a big fish auction, if you're there about 07:00 am. The fishing boats are in Puerto, so it's very picturesque.

Staying in Cadiz, have a good look in the old section. Then, if you're still interested, take a walk along the boardwalk along the beaches. There are blocks and blocks of great fish restaurants along this promenade. I tried to eat lunch at all of them but it wasn't possible. There's a lot of good along that promenade.

My bottom line is thinking you should stay around Cadiz. Some other day visit Sevilla and give it enough time. It's a great city too.

The ferry to el Puerto de Santa Maria leaves from very close to where the Cruise ship will dock. It doesn't run very frequently, so make sure you can make it back for your departure. In el Puerto you may have an opportunity to tour Bodegas Osborne. You might also have lunch at Monasterio San Miguel, a 5-star deluxe Hotel in el Puerto.

I dont remember the ferry running very early.

There is a Bus Terminal just outside the Gate at the port (Cadiz). Sevilla is 2-hours by bus, 1+45 by Renfe regional rail (hourly). Regional rail to el Puerto is about 20 min. Of course you could take regional rail to el Puerto (begins at 6:00 AM) and return on the ferry (departs from across the parking lot from the Hotel Santa Maria).

It's likely that your Cruise ship will have a bus tour to Sevilla arranged (very expensive).

When our cruise stopped for two days in Cadiz, we took the train (40 minutes) to Jerez one day to see the Royal Equestrian School Museum & horse ballet, tour several small museums, and go to some bodegas for tours and sherry tasting. great day!

The second day we did a self-guided hisotrical walking tour of Cadiz--also a very good day.
