Getting from Budapest to Zurich
My partner & I are planning to go from Budapest to Zurich at the beginning of October. What would be the best & cheapest way to get there. Train or flight? Any recommendations on discount air websites?
Also does anyone have suggestions on whether to spend 3days in Zurich or is it worth spending some time in Lucern as well? Or is there somewhere else near Zurich worth visiting? |
Hi wilamena25,
Of course I can't tell which method will be "best" for you -- But the train trip is about 12 hours. There is an overnight train leaving Budapest at 17.50 and arriving in Zurich at 06.20. Raileurope prices the route at about $220 (more for a sleeping car or couchette). There is a discount airline flying this route -- Air Berlin (www.airberlin.com) with prices at about 120-170 E. I personally LOVE Luzern, so I would suggest you spend your time there or in other towns on the lake. However, if you really want to see the mountains, go a further three hours to Wengen or Muerren in the Berner Oberland. If you want to stay near Zurich, there are still loads of smaller places to explore. In addition to Luzern, you can visit Rapperswil & Zug just to name two. Have fun! s |
Bringing your message back up "to the top" since you are (somewhat) new here... how do I know that? click on your own name - - it's a valuable tip that fodors fails to tell you when they send you that intial e-mail confirming your registration...
...though perhaps you posted your "other" question specifically focusing on the FLIGHT possibilities. In that case, you were right to re-post with a revised message header. In any event, I don't think that there uis one, but these routes and carriers change constantly. Take a look at www.whichbudget.com and your options may be better if you train to Vienna/Bratislava first. Best wishes, Rex |
Try www.swiss.ch - that's the local Swiss airlines. They do some deals for Budapest and there might be some on now.
We were just there last weekend and we flew with Swiss from Zurich. Good luck. :) |
Good advice! I just booked a Swiss flight which had the cheapest flights for the times I needed. Remember: they don't serve free food or drinks anymore on European flights so bring your own!

airberlin.com shows flights from Budapest to Zurich as low as 79Euro during the week in October, taxes and fees included. |
More and better answers here, than on your "other" similar post...
