Be sure to take shoes with a good traction, as the streets are quite slick if you get any rain.

You can walk everywhere in Matera. Just be prepared for LOTS of steps up and down.

You can walk everywhere in the sassi if you don't mind a lot of steps and uneven cobblestones. If you want to go into the newer area just above the sassi, then you can either walk up a lot of steps or take one of the Ape taxis that spend their time running tourists up and down. For other parts of Matera, you would want transport (most tourists don't venture from the sassi and upper new part).

If you wanted to eat dinner in the upper part(I like the area between Piazza Giovanni Pascoli which sometimes has artistic events and Piazzetta Sant'Eligio and also around Piazza del Sedile), I would take a taxi back down as the uneven stones in the dark won't be easy (especially if you had wine).

We were in Matera this past September and loved the place. We stayed at the Palazzo Degli Abati in the Sassi. The property was one of the coolest places we've ever stayed.

I goggled your hotel's name and it was not too far from our hotel. You can walk easily walk to most places.

A girl at our hotel recommended the 19a Winery for dinner and it was excellent. It is just off of the Piazza Vittorio Veneto past the tourist office on Via Lombardi 3. Look for the sign and go down the steps. The place is located in a three or four level cave. Very cool.

Buon viaggio,
