Getting around Fussen without a car?
 

Just wondering if I stay in Fussen how easy is it to get to Nuschwnstein castle and Tegelberg Gondola where the summer luge ride is located? I will not have a car and will depend on public transportation or my two feet!

For the castles, you might want to stay in
Hohenschwangau.

The luge is about a mile from Neuchwanstein Castle.

I expect that you will want a taxi.

You can take a bus or walk to the castles from Fussen easily. We have done both. Walking (or you can rent a bike) is very pleasant and flat until you get to the castle area.

You can also take a taxi and they are plentiful.

There are buses between Fuessen Bahnhof and Hohenschwangau (the castles) and you can check the schedule at the German train site:

The buses to and fro seem to run every 20 to 30 minutes.

As someone mentioned, I like to stay nearer the castles as I like evening walks along the alpine lakes in the area. But, if you want evening shopping and more selection of restaurants, I believe that Fuessen is better.

We stayed in Schwangau and rode bicycles to the castles and Tegelberg. It's a beautiful little place and we had our best meal there.

We saw a lot of people biking, which looked like a lot of fun. If I didn't have a car, that would be my choice for transportation there.

I personally would also stay in Hohenschwangau as mentioned previously rather than Fussen. Fussen is nice, but Hohenschwangau is magical with the castles up on the hills and the alpine lake there. I would have loved to have time in the evenings to do some walking after the bus loads of tourists had departed for the day. Fussen does have more choices for restaurants and nightlife.

Dukey - i've walked there a few times from the Fussen train station and it's about two miles to the castle area then a very steep uphill hike so all told for a fairly energetic walk about an hour or so. Even if you go by bus you still either have to hike up or pay top euro for the fiacre or shuttle bus service to castle entrance.

I'm curious about this luge run. Is it open to novice riders in the winter?

No need to walk or take a taxi. There are almost hourly bus connections from Hohenschwangau to Tegelberg. In most cases it is the same bus that brought you out from Fuessen to the castles. See http://www.rvo-bus.de/site/rvo__bus/...che/fpl/78.pdf for the schedule.

I know the luge is open in dry weather, I don't know if it's seasonal. It is a blast and I'm not a fan of rides usually. When you go to the window just buy 2 tickets. We ran directly back to the counter. So did everyone else we observed while sipping a beer and watching the hang gliders land. sigh.
