Getting Around Amalfi Coast
Hi everyone,
We're just starting to plan our first year wedding anniversary and we decided on the Amalfi Coast. We read that the best place start is Sorrento. Once we get there, how do we travel from place to place? Is renting a car a good idea? Would you recommend taking day trips or spending time at various hotels? Thanks in advance! |
Well, you'll have to start in Sorrento anyways but I wouldn't consider it the "best place" on the Amalfi Coast. But it can serve as an affordable, desirable base for a week's stay or longer. The answers I'd offer to your questions really depend on your interests, travel style and budget.
If you want luxury and comfort, then I'd suggest hiring a private driver (usually a Mercedes sedan) to get around. Otherwise, I'd settle for bus rides. Did both and have enjoyed both. In general, most people don't recommend renting your own car due to difficult driving conditions and lack of parking. But if you're adventurous, go for it. I would take day trips using bus rides from Sorrento if I was on a limited budget. But if you can afford it, I'd definitely recommend spending a few nights in Positano, 1 or more nights in Amalfi or up in Ravello and 1 or more nights on Capri. I can tell you that experiencing the town of Ravello and the island of Capri around sunset and soon after sunrise exhude a wonderful, serene atmosphere that many day-trippers aren't privy to. You can bask in some wonderful views before the crowds descend. |

I'd travel by a combination of boat and bus.
I would also stay in Sorrento and if the budget permits it, keep the room in Sorrento and take a few overnights to Positano and Ravello and then Capri. I realize you're paying double for 3 nights but to me that would be ideal. One night in each of those is enough but packing and unpacking for one night is a hassle. Just take with some overnight things. |
I agree with Bluefan regarding Sorrento, I just returned from Positano yesterday. We had our own car and went all over and the last place I thought we would give a try was Sorrento. Coming from Positano (about 20 minute drive) in my opinion I did not like Sorrento, it was to large a city, much traffic, noise, etc. One good find was lunch at "Buca", wonderful! Then a quick drive back to Positano for a swim!
