getaway to croatia!!

hello everyone!
my partner and i are going to croatia at the start of september-we fly to ancona on the 29th, and basically are looking for the cheapest ferry over to split? altho looking on the internet we were quite shocked by the prices of some of them! we are starting to get a bit concerned about being able to get a ferry accross!!
our plan was ( as we're only going for two weeks) to get the ferry from ancona, and then try and visit just the islands e.g. hvar, Brac, vis, korcula, mljet by boat-does anyone know are the islands quite accesible around this time of year? i hear hvar is one definatley not to miss, altho all i've heard about croatia is from people who have been earlier in the year-is it still as beautiful in september or has the weather started to get colder by then?
thanks for anyone who is able to help us with some info!

sorry, but also, was just wondering if anyone has been to korcula-is it true that its quite like dubrovnic? only because we dont think we'll be able to get down there (does it take like a days travel??) so maybe we could substitute that with a few days in Korcula? what do you think?!

We were in Croatia last year during the last two weeks of September and the weather was perfect. Although we aren't swimmers, we saw lots of people swimming, so I guess the water is still warmish. Korcula is the only island we visited and I didn't find it especially like Dubrovnik. There is no place like Dubrovnik and I can't imagine going to Croatia and not visiting this beautiful city. By car, it's an easy drive from Korcula to Dubrovnik -- maybe 2 hours if I remember correctly. Don't know about boat schedules or other public transportation. Croatia is beautiful and interesting, so I know you will enjoy your trip there.

I was in Croatia in early September and found the weather just perfect. Still very warm and swimming in the sea was no problem.

In one sense, Korcula town could be described as a mini-Dubrovnik because they are both walled towns. crckwc is absolutely right, Dubrovnik is stunning and there is no way Korcula would be a replacement for Dubrovnik. It doesn't have the high walls, streets paved with marble, stunning views out to sea - and I could go on...

In two weeks you could probably do all the islands you mentioned and Dubrovnik also. Personally I would take things at a more relaxing pace and would skip one or two of the islands you mentioned and take in Dubrovnik (Vis and Brac would be the ones I would leave out if time was tight, you can always do Vis by day-tour from Hvar).

I don't want to knock Dubrovnik. But for some people who value peace and coziness, Korcula has a lot going for it. The seaside view from our SOBE was as beautiful as any in Dubrovnik. We could walk the entire town in twenty minutes.

The Stradum in Dubrovnik is often overwhelmed with tourists. In Korcula, they're usually all from the same (one) cruise ship. When they leave, you can stretch out in the cafes and count the people left, enjoying the space.

You're choosing the busiest time of the year for the Italian ferries. Fortunately, most of the traffic on the 29th will be returning to Italy, not heading for Croatia.

thanks to everyone for responding!
i think we are going to take your advice and drive down to dubrovnic, still taking in the islands but then probably going to just take a day trip to Vis as suggested.
and thanks for the link to the ferry thing,- v. informative, thanks!
