Germany - Wandering in Bavaria
We will be visiting Germany in July & need some suggestions for a couple of days.
We have plans for Munich and the Fussen area. Somewhere nearby would be different/special. I'd really appreciate ideas. Thanks to all. |

I agree with swandav2000 -
I really enjoyed a visit to Garmisch-Partenkirchen when I visited Munich years ago. I left early in am on the train and left by the afternoon. It's got beautiful gingerbread houses and a gondola lift up to the top of the mountain. I was there is June but at the time there were few crowds. Not sure what it would be like in July. I also visited Bodensee which seemed like it might be interesting but I arrived when the weather was really bad and eth last ferry had just left. We stayed and hiked around Falkenstein as well. The inn is very unique but very $$$. The ruins are ok, not worth seeing IMO but the hikes around were nice. |
Above Mittenwald is the lovely and (relatively) isolated Leutaschtal. You should include going to the top of the Zugspitze and an enjoyably easy hike around the Eibsee at the base of the mountain.
Be sure to visit the Weiskirch and also Oberammergau. |
I love pretty lakes, and there are lots of them not far from Munich. My favorites are Tegernsee, Walchensee, and Konigsee. But for an interesting look at another of the mad king Ludwig's castles, go southeast to the Herrenchiemsee and catch the ferry to the island in the middle of the lake. The castle and its gardens are very impressive.
