Germany to Venice

Will be driving from Wutzburg, Germany to Venice,Italy early Dec. Mapquest states a little over 8 hours. Would like to know information on the roads and travel. Are roads good and also cannot find out what kind of tolls and fees are involved. Any information appreciated. First time in Europe.

I haven't checked the route (and I usually recommend one of three other web sites), but if the route goes via Munich/Innsbruck OR Munich/Salzburg, the road(s) can be considered the equal (or superior to) the best interstate highways anywhere in the US.

There is the matter of a vignette to be purchased to drive the Autobahn in Austria, for either route (about 15 euro?) - - though you could gamble scofflawing it. And there is some modest toll in Italy. None in Germany.

Best wishes,

Rex
Are you going around Munich or through Fussen? We went through Fussen a couple weeks ago, the roads are fine, but be prepared for snow on either route. Buy the Austrian pass at any gas station before the border (and buy it, don't blow it off!). Have Euro handy for the Italian tolls, we got a ticket, and it was about 18 euro from one end to another.

Have fun

Rex-what other web site would you recommend to look at, mapquest gave me directions Salzburg/Innsbruck, would like to see what others say but glad to hear pretty decent roads.Nice to know tolls aren't that bad either.

Mappy.com that I often use calculates 5 hrs 15 minutes via Innsbruck and Brunnerm most of the way on autobahn. Could that be that quick ? Of course this is without consideration to wheather/snow situations.

Regarding my post above, of course your are not driving from Munich (stupid of me) but coming from Wutzburg (Wuerzburg?). If you mean Wuerzburg, then Mappy says 7 hrs 16 minutes.

You could take the autostrada (tolls) from Brenner via Verona, or a scenic route via Val Pusteria & Cortina through the Dolomites, joining the autostrada near Belluno.

Probably not much in it timewise ...

Steve
