Maybe I missed it but when are you going? There is a Third Reich Tour in downtown Munich and Dachau is a moving experience for WWII buffs. You can get to Dachau on Munich public transport.

44t - I agree with you - on a quick drive by the valley ain't worth it though they could easily drive along a bit of it from Melk towards Vienna. Melk Abbey is worth the stop for sure.
