Germany/Switz for 2 weeks

I have been researching flights to Germany and the lowest I've found is around $800-900 per person RT. I guess when you go in June, that's the price you're going to pay, huh? We will probably fly into Cologne and fly out of Geneva or something.

Anyway, my husband and I are going to Germany. (He knows Germany better and I know Switz better). We have places to stay in Hamburg and Stuttgart. So we will base ourselves in those two places while in Germany. What are some good day trips from those places? After Germany, we will go to Switzerland. We may have a place to stay in Nyon (not far from Geneva). I was born in Switzerland, but have really only spent time near Geneva and Zermatt. What are some good day trips from the Nyon/Lausanne area? I really want to see Gruyeres and maybe Fribourg. The only place we will get a hotel (hopefully) is Zermatt. I love hiking there and need a full day. Is the Glacier Express from Zermatt to St. Moritz worth it? How much extra will I have to pay on top of my rail pass?

Any info would be helpful. I should really buy those plane tickets this week.

Flying from Belfast? Reno? Cairo? I don't think that anyone can comment on airfare prices without knowing the airport of origination.

Best wishes,

Rex

Hi tms99,

Here are some ideas for your trips from Nyon:

Montreux old town

Lavaux
http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserR...reux_Vaud.html

Promenade Fleuri
http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserR...reux_Vaud.html

Morges
http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserR...rges_Vaud.html

Gruyeres

Saanen

Gstaad
http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserR...wiss_Alps.html

I think Morges will be especially convenient (and worthwhile!) for you as it's so close to Nyon.

Also think about the medieval village of Yvoire, which is west of Thonon on the French side of the lake (haven't been there myself yet).

If you don't already know it, the ferry schedule is at www.cgn.ch.

Oh, and I really don't think the GE is worthwhile; I always ALWAYS prefer to be on the mountain instead of wasting time watching it slip by my window.

Have fun!

From Stuttgart, I recommend Bad Wimpfen, Schwaebisch Hall, Herrenberg, Tuebingen, Hohenzollern castle and Hechingen.

From Newark in June - - if you have found an air travel opportunity that is a _good_ match for your dates, times and exact cities you prefer for even one dollar under $900, then I recommend you buy now. If it's ninety-nine dollars under, you might cross your fingers that it is still there.
