Germany questions
Hi! Travelling to Germany in Aug 2000. Coming from Poland (thru Vienna) to Munich. Looking for accommodations in Munich between 100 - 130 DM ($100 CDN), any suggestions?
We will arrive on the 21st an would like to stay in Munich for 4 or 5 days (too long?) and then move on to the Rhine for the remainder. Any suggestions on where to stay on the Rhine? We were thinking Boppard, St. Goar but are open to other ideas. We are traveling by train. On the Rhine we are looking at all types of accommodations including castles under 150 DM. PLEASE HELP!!!
Ursula..

There are several hotels adjacent to Munich station, in your price bracket, and which are about 10/15 minutes stroll from the city centre(or take the U Bahn).
Personally I think 4/5 nights in Munich is too long, although there are some pleasant day trips into the country. 2/3 nights should be plenty, as there is more to see and do along the Rhine.
If you type Rhine in the text search at the top of this page, click Find, and wait a minute or so, a whole raft of info on the Rhine and Hotels will appear in the form of previous posts.

Hello!
I can't recommend a specific hotel in Munich but I don't recommend staying right by Hauptbahnhof (the train station). It's not unsafe or anything, it's just not the nicest area. I recommend staying by Marienplatz, Isartor, Viktualienmarkt and Odeonsplatz(I live in Munich). That's the heart of the city and much more interesting than Hauptbahnhof.

I stayed in December for two nights at the Hotel Jurine. Very pleasant. It's on the way east of the city. In many of the neighboring buildings, you can still see signs of bullet holes from the occupation. I was on business, and I didn't get to see much of the city, so I can't really give you the proximity of other 'attractions'.

Sorry - don't know where my head was - that was in Berlin - not Munich. Please ignore.

Ursula, I'd also recommend you not stay near the train station. Munchen has a wonderful public transportation system that you should use to stay elsewhere. The center of town would be great, and you might want to get in touch with the tourist office there to make a reservation for you if no one comes up with a specific recommendation. Much as I love Munchen, I also agree 4-5 days is too long... not more than 3 should do it, even with touring Nymphenburg and the Residenz. You can stay as far out as Erding and take the train in (turns into the subway) if you want to get a flavor for the countryside, plus would almost undoubtedly be less expensive. For your castle hotels, both Reichenstein (St Goar)and auf Schonburg (Oberwesel) have rooms for DM 145 -DM 155, but you would need to book them ASAP and that will mean a room not on the river side, but you'll still get the atmosphere and the fun of staying in the castle... try their websites: www.castle-hotel-rheinfels.com/ and /www.hotel-schoenburg.com/good luck!
Thank you to everyone who took time to reply. Our flight leaves Berlin on the 31st, early in the morning. Is there a train from Frankfurt to Berlin? I checked rail-europe and they say there are no routes.
Everyone seems to like Saltzburg. We will be coming fr. Poland on the 21st. Instead of going straight to Munich should we spend a night in Vienna or Saltzburg?(the train fr. Poland goes thru these places) Or should we just do saltzburg on the day-trip from Munich?

I'm new at this so please forgive any of my blunders! Also wanted to ask about the Romantic Road Bus trip. I have read that railpass-holders get a deal on this trip: does that apply to German rail-passes? If we do this trip we were thinking we would stay at the end of the line(Wurtsburg or Rothenburg I think) so we are closer to the rhine. But we would have to take all our luggage with us and leave it on the bus during stops. Can we do this and will our bags be safe?
Ursula: Salzburg is lovely - it's worth more than just a day trip and much more enjoyable than Vienna. We stayed near the Munich train station at Hotel Helvetia. Very reasonable with pleasant staff, but there was lots of street noise.

We always make a point of staying in Bacharach (on the Rhine). The small train station is right in town. We have our favorite little restaurant there. They have terrific apple strudel

Ursula..

In one of your posts above you asked about trains from Frankfurt to Berlin. There are direct trains from Frankfurt to Berlin at 0915 1015 1215 1315 1415 1515 and so on. Journey time is 4 hours and 3 minutes. To catch these trains you first have to take a local train from Frankfurt Airport to Frankfurt Bahnhoff, only a few minutes journey.
I won't buy into the Vienna/Salzburg discussion as everybody has different opinions, but I would definitely stay 1 night in Vienna, a glorious city.

question: Tony & others....

I had planned 2 days in Salzburg, but I'm SO TEMPTED to head over to Vienna (3 1/2 hours by train) to Vienna, just for a day. However, that would mean a 5 hour train back to Munich the next day (where I have to catch my plane back to Texas). Should I just relax and enjoy Salzburg for two days or do a quickie tour , 1 day each, of Salzburg and Vienna?
|
I would do two days in Salzburg. Trying to do Vienna in a day (or part of one) is not worth the time and effort.

I would certainly take at least 2 days to travel between Munich and the Rhine with a stop over in Rothenburg. In Rothenburg we stayed at Gastehaus Hofmann - very reasonable (50 DM in '87)
(address - Stollengasse 29, 8803 Rothenburg o.T.)

In Salzburg we stayed at
Romerwirt
Nontaler Hauptstrasse 47

Carol..

re Salzburg and/or Vienna.

I'm hesitant to make a definitive statement on one or the other, but I'll tell you what happenned to me about 3 years ago.

I was on a train heading from Switzerland to Salzburg, the same train was continuing to Vienna. At Innsbruck an Austrian lady ,aged late thirties, and very smartly dressed, joined the train and sat across from myself. After a while we got talking and I outlined my tour so far, and told her that I was leaving the train in Salzburg for 2/3 days, whereupon she became quite emphatic that I should continue to Vienna in preference to Salzburg, which in her opinion was not to be missed.
Anyway I did'nt, and got off at Salzburg. However her descriptions of Vienna had intrigued me to the point that the following day I decided to take a return train trip to Vienna, without my luggage. The journey was quite fast, trains every hour, taking just over 3 hours I think, and I was in Vienna in time for morning coffee and tortes(?).yummm.
I can only say that I was kicking myself for leaving my luggage in Salzburg, as I really did'nt want to leave town that night, so enthralled was I with Vienna.
As Steve said one day in each is probably not enough, but to be close to Vienna and miss it is almost a sin.
I have'nt been back to Europe since but Vienna is very close to the top of my list for the next trip. I don't want to start another argument, but for my money Vienna leaves Rome, Florence and maybe even Venice for dead.
No, not Venice, but Rome & Florence definitely.

Hello!
I've been to Salzburg several times just for the day (from Munich, with visitors from the states) and I really think 1 day is plenty. That's enough time to wander all over the old city, see the castle and dine. Stay longer if you want to go in the mountains. Vienna is a great city but just 1 day there wouldn't be enough for me.
|
Man...this is a difficult decision to make...so much to see...so little time. I think I'll just take Salzburg for two days, using one day for the countryside. I'd like to get to Hallstatt but it seems like I'd be spending 6 hours on the train just getting there/coming back. Am I right on that????

Vienna may have to be on my itinerary for next time since my biggest headache about doing it for a day is then having to spend 5 hours on the train back to Munich where I will be leaving from the next day.

hi, 2 years ago i was in munich and i stayed at Astron deutsh kaiser hotel it is right outside the haufbanhof (main rail station) and near all the nice areas (marienplatz, vik market..) i recommend, but i don't know the price of the room.

Maybe 180 DM is a bit over your budget, but I'd highly recommend the Hotel Cafe Post in Assmannshausen. It's about 150 meters from the train stop and the hotel is a family-owned and managed, and cooking operation with very friendly service and convenient to the Rhine boats (the KD line boat landing is about 150 meters west and KD boats are included in your Europass if you have one).

A bonus: Assmannshausen is a smaller, quieter, less-touristy town than many along this part of the Rhine. We'd stay there again.
