Germany Question
Does anyone know if either Frankfurt or Berlin would be the best spots to find former Concentration camps. I think that Berlin would be the best city to visit in germany. Is there any Concentration camp tours in either cities.

There is the Sachsenhausen concentration camp in Berlin which can easily reached by the city S Bahn train. I'm not aware of any concentration camp near Frankfurt.

Berlin would be better because it was a transit point. There were a lot more over that way in Germany (NE) and in Poland/CR than in Western Germany. There was at least a small one in the west -- Hinzert, but it has been cleared.

here is a great article about Sachsenhausen concentration camp.

Besides Sachsenhausen, you will also find the following in Berlin:
- Topography of Terror (an exhibition on the grounds of the former Gestapo HQ) - House of the Wannsee Conference - Grunewald train station (a memorial platform for those who got deported from there) - the (modern) Holocaust Memorial (and documentation center) - the Jewish Museum |
I visited Sachenshausen near Berlin last year - it will do the job in terms of sobering conscious raising even though there are few remains of structures - there is a gas chamber, etc. however
About 1 hour by train or S-Bahn (train is much quicker) to Oranienburg (sp?) then about a mile from the station. It's in old East Germany and Oranienburg still looks a bit tattered And in Berlin you can visit Plotzensee Prison where Nazi opponents such as those who tried to assasinate Hitler were tortured, some hung on meat hooks still there And the Topography of Terrors in Berlin documents the Nazi Terror in the remains of a building run by the SS i believe |
