Germany Opens Electric Trucks on Autobahns

In a first test to make truck travel more green, Germany has opened a 5-km stretch of overhead wires to run heavy hybrid lorries - if all goes right we could see electric trucks run with a catenaire on overhead wires - again much like a train, everywhere and depending on how the electricity is made, could make truck travel more green - and why not do this with all hybrid cars that want to. ttps://www.google.com/search?sa=X&q=germany+autobahn+trucks+catenaire+el ectric&tbm=isch&source=lnms&ved=2ahUKEwjypdSpy9PiA hUPC6wKHcKWCI8QsAR6BAgDEAE &biw=1097&bih=535 https://www.google.com/search?biw=10...mg.RzamDlPj5lc https://www.thelocal.de/20190128/ger...it-on-autobahn |
I saw this last week. We were driving from Darmstadt to Frankfurt airport and was wondering what the overhead power line on the autobahn was for. No one was using the overhead power cable last week. I suspected this was for vehicles with dual power source as the overhead wire suddenly disappeared.

It's part of several field tests.
Not only for hybrid trucks but also for fully electric trucks to charge the batteries on the go. The system is not suitable for cars as the distance between the roof of regular vehicles and the overhead wire is too long. |
No not suitable for cars now but was thinking in future there could be an electric car lane and hook up to lower catenaires much like trolley buses
