Germany itinerary help

We've started planning for a 3-week trip to Germany and I need your expert advice on locations and days spent in each. Here goes:

3 days - Munich and environs
(Fly to Berlin from Munich end of Day 3)
3 days - Berlin and environs
(Fly back to Munich and pick up rental car end of third day)
2 days - Regensburg (family visit)
2 days - Rothenburg (from Regensburg via Romantic Road)
2 days - Ehrstadt/Sinsheim (family visit)
2 days - Freiburg
1 day - Titisee (I know it's touristy - would like an alternative here)
2 days - Pinswang or Reutte (want to see the castles and hike the area)
2 days - Garmisch-Partenkirchen or Oberammergau
1 day - back to Munich to return car and fly home

So, are the drives between locations reasonable? Have I allocated too little/too much time in any spot? Many thanks!!

Hi C,

You can get info on driving times at www.viamichelin.com and www.mappy.com.

I don't think that Titisee is any more touristy than RodT, Reutte, Garmisch or Oberammergau.

As I recall, it's a pleasant town near a lovely lake. However, it was raining heavily, so we didn't spend much time there.

Thanks for the Michelin and Mappy links - I'll definitely check them out. I just want to be sure we don't miss any of the "off the beaten track" gems between points.

I would recommend more time in Berlin than Munich, there is lots more to see. In Berlin, we were in the Pergamon museum itself for most of one day!! It is definitely not to be missed.

Neuschwanstein is a couple of hours drive from Munich, a gorgeous castle. http://www.neuschwanstein.de/english/index.htm

When you drive to Freiburg, I would recommend a detour to Strasbourg(france) Its best during Christmas but the Cathedral and the Petite France area is definitely worth a visit anytime. http://www.strasbourg.com/strasbourg...monuments.html

We enjoyed visiting the Heidelberg castle, I am not sure whether you will be driving past? http://www.cvb-heidelberg.de/e553/e855/index_eng.html

People interested in cars may find the Mercedes Benz museum in Stuttgart interesting. http://www.museum-mercedes-benz.com/?lang=en

I think two days in Rothenburg may be too much, it is really too touristy. A half-day visit was sufficient for us.

Have fun!!

I see that you'll be driving, so my comment probably won't be much use to you, but I'll make it anyway.

When I went to Titisee, I went from Freiburg by train. There was marvelous, rather mysterious scenery. I would go again just for the train ride.

I have always enjoyed Rothenburg in the morning and evening when the day-tourists have gone, but I don't know that it's worth two full days. It's crammed with tourists! However, that's my jaundiced view, since I've been there five or six times.

I did enjoy the nightwatchman's tour, though.

I can recommend the Hotel Gasthof Glocke. I've stayed there three times. Once I stayed at the Eisenhut, but I felt ripped off. We took advantage of a special deal, but they gave us an inferior room and charged a mint for it.

>I don't know that [Rothenburg is] worth two full days.

We spent 1 1/2 days and 2 nights there. We weren't bored.

I highly recommend dinner at Mittermeier.

Great comments! We have some flexibility on the Munich/Berlin days, so I'll adjust for more time in Berlin. With Rothenburg, perhaps we'll take more time driving there so that a bit less time is actually spent in town. I'm not familiar with the nightwatchman's tour? Is there a website and do you book in advance? Thanks again!

Hi CleoB,
As for your stay... 2 days - Garmisch-Partenkirchen or Oberammergau, I'd just like suggest Mittenwald. Gorgeous village surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery.
