Well. So much in your last entry that I do not even know where to start. I'll limit myself to 4 observations-
1. If you think NYE is a risky time of year for women only when roving "sex mobs" of migrants are around, you need to talk with more women. If you think only the immigrants have the opinion that we should be bought and sold like camels, you need to talk with more women. That is sadly not something limited to one culture. 2. Unless you were physically in an American city to observe those "violent" protesters, you have no room to speak. I was. The genuine protestors were not the problem- it was the low lifes using them as cover that were the problem. 3. People cite the lost Protestant ethic here as well, and I'm betting it's no less a myth in London and Brussels than it is in America. The 1950s or 1850s or 1750s- whatever century you see as the glory days- well, the good old days weren't so good. You are even likely descended from an ethnic/cultural group that was considered unsavory at one time or another. 4. Disneyworld is one of my more dangerous destinations. I have never been as afraid on the "mean streets" of Chicago or LA or DC as I was facing down mothers armed with strollers;) Isibaker- I am terribly sorry I've contributed to the derailment of this thread. If I waited for a friend to come along instead of traveling solo, I'd never go anywhere. It can occasionally be lonely but it is so rewarding and I hope you have a wonderful trip. |
"Isibaker- I am terribly sorry I've contributed to the derailment of this thread."
"Sorry?" So sorry that you just keep on doing it. Spats like this belong elsewhere. And BTW she's going in April, not on NYE. Suffice it to say that it's less safe to be out late at night in any of the major German cities around the train stations - less safe than elsewhere at other hours. |
I live in Frankfurt and my 26 year old daughter lives here too. We have no qualms about our safety here, anywhere here, and that includes the train station area. There is police presence here and it is very safe. It is a trendy place with trendy bars, unique international markets and great ethnic food.
That said, Frankfurt is one of the older and most historic cities in Germany and passing it by means you miss something. Those who tell you to give it a pass know nothing about it and are probably going by old guide books written with the military in mind who were all stationed here and wanted to go someplace else. The city WAS the pits until the 80's when they decided to turn its reputation around. I think they have been successful. You certainly do not hear about any kind of refugee problems here, as the population is so diverse, we don't mind a few people more from other countries. Frankfurt was the center of Jewish culture in Germany for centuries, so there are a lot of Jewish sites here. There are no Nazi sites though because Hitler hated Frankfurt for being so liberal and for having too many Jews in his opinion. The city is almost 50% green with dozens of parks and a huge city forest, there are dozens of museums to visit, lots of Farmers markets, the popular Klein Markt Halle, and many neighborhoods are filled with turn of the century architecture. The neighborhood of Höchst is part of the Half-Timbered Route that runs through Germany and also has one of the oldest churches, St. Justinus, built in 850. http://www.deutsche-fachwerkstrasse.de/uk/index.php http://www.justinuskirche.de/files/p...skirche-en.pdf |

Good Grief, M-girl. Pat down the ruffled feathers. No one is trying to disrespect Frankfurt. The OP said she was going to land at FRA (the best airport for the Romantic Road, and spend 4-5 days on the Romantic Road, with a first night in Frankfurt. If she cares about Frankfurt, why did she only schedule one night? She has 2-5 nights everywhere else. Looks to me like she wanted to get on the Romantic Road but figured it wouldn't be feasible on Day 1 with the flight and jet lag, presumably. I'm the one that suggested "0 nights" in Frankfurt. I own no "old guidebook for the military," I guarantee you. I was not in the military. I can also tell you that I know something about Frankfurt. And I was not "giving Frankfurt a pass." It's just that, as Spaarne says, There is no reason to overnight in Frankfurt - not unless you plan to spend a couple of days really seeing the place, and then you'd need at least 2 nights. But isibaker doesn't have that kind of time it seems. So isi, just get on a train at the airport and get started with your trip. Go to Würzburg or Bacharach or wherever. Or if the cues you've given are all wrong and you really want to explore Frankfurt, add a night there and cut somewhere else. (I'm thinking a whole bunch of forum members used the wrong side of the bed this morning.) |
Frankfurt is great -I've loved the time I spent there on several occasions - especially in Sachsenhausen area to drink apple wine in lively taverns- lotsof night spots in general that local folksOP'sage flock to- but it does not for Americans simply have the appeal of lets say smaller more 'quaint' towns like mentioned above.
That said since the OP is landing in Frankfurt it makes sense to stay there the first night and maybe the next day - it has a really nice hostel where you can meet folks and ferret out the gems of Frankfurt (which is not its overall Manhattan on the Main looks) and see world-class museums, a typical German large city with a very pleasant pedestrian shopping zones - large parks with huge Tropic Greenhouses, if I recall rightly, and great rail connections. From Frankfurt move on to the Rhine/Mosel areas then down to the Black Forest, etc. |
Yeah, I do get my feathers ruffled when so many posters on this forum have the attitude that visitors should run away from Frankfurt as fast as possible, that there is nothing worthy to see here. Has nothing to do with the wrong side of the bed.

Yes an extra day on the Romantic Road to Americans may sound better than a day in Frankfurt but in reality they may have enjoyed a day at leisure in Frankfurt better- especially in summer when Romantic Road towns can be complete zoos with tour buses.
