Germany/Eastern Europe Itinerary

Planning a trip to include the Southern Germany/Bavaria Region (driving in this area for a few days), Vienna, Budapest and
Prague. The problem is my husband wants to
see Berlin which is out of the way. Looking for suggestions on possible itineraries for the least amount of travel (most by train). Will have around 2 1/2 weeks, possibly longer. Any suggestions appreciated. Thank you.

Berlin is definitely worth seeing particularly if you enjoy 20th century history (even some ancient), museums, good food, nightlife, pleasant people. You could travel to Berlin from Southern Germany, then it is about 4 1/2 hours to Prague, then to Vienna and to Budapest.

Travel writer Rick Steves isn't always on the mark, but he's dead-on when he states, "Southern Bavaria is a pin-cushion of stop-worthy sites."

Try to make a point of spending at least a good portion of your trip in Munich and points south. In addition to the much-visited King Ludwig-related sites (i.e., Neuschwanstein, Linderhof), there is much in the way of mountain scenery (a trip to the summit of the Zugspitze can be quite memorable), along with many soul-stirring baroque churches. Munich, too, should not be missed. It is both cosmopolitan while maintaining a strong sense of its history. Shopping and sightseeing in this city is a real delight. (You'll want at least three nights and two days in Munich alone.)

Do consider taking a pass on Berlin (save it for the inevitable next trip to Germany), spend more time in S. Bavaria, and then make the trek to Prague. Next, it's on to Vienna and Hungary. By doing this, you'll save on the travel time and have a chance to delve deeper into the wonderful region that is Southern Bavaria.

Best of luck.
