Germany & Czech Republic (10 days)

Hello guys!

So we're a family of 5,flying in and out from Prague.

Planning to do the following

Day 1: 1/2 day in Prague (the day of arrival)

Day 2: Prague

Day 3: Prague

Day 4:travel by car from Prague to Munich (planning to stopover at Regensburg, any other suggestions would be welcome)

Day 5: Munich (visit churches and shopping)

Day 6: Kongisee+Berchesgaten +Eagle's nest

Day 7: Fussen Castles

Day 8:Hallstat and Salzburg

Day 9: Munich (Visit sea life, BMW museum or English Garden for a picnic day)

Day 10: Go back to Prague (Spend half a day at prague/munich)

Day 11: Fly out from prague..

So I have a couple of questions

Do you have alternative suggestions to do around this area? Are we doing the best of all?

And is one base for Day 5-10 is enough? or it would be tiring?

Thank you in advance!

We are on a road trip right now doing much of the area you are planning (with some more added on since we have a month). We are currently in Strasbourg and headed to Munich Tuesday then Salzburg, Slovenia, Budapest Hungary, Vienna Austria, Prague and then back home to France. I am trying to post mini trip reports along the way, so if you watch my profile name I will try to comment on the places you will be too once we get there. Also, my email is in my profile so you can email me directly if you want to with little stuff...

It's going to be hectic and you'll be spending a fair amount of time driving, but it's certainly doable and you'll have a blast. Here are some of my favorite things in the areas you'll be going for your consideration:

Prague

Bakeshop: Great for breakfast and not very expensive
Medieval Art at the Convent of St. Agnes: Inexpensive, incredible art and you can see it all in less than two hours

Regensburg WurstKuchl: Yeah, you can eat 10

Bavarian National Museum Munich: Great Museum and kids will love the armor and the Nativity scenes. (Been to Munich 4 times and was never awed by the churches)

Salzbergwerk Berchtesgaden: I avoided the salt mine tour for years but my kids loved it and yeah, I loved it too.

Pilgrimage Church of Wies: 30 minute drive north of Neuschwanstein and definitely worth the stop, jaw-droppingly beautiful.

Good luck and have fun.

"Are we doing the best of all?"
Prague and Regensburg are great destinations. And it sounds like you have specific goals in Munich that interest you as well.

Days 6-7 don't sound like the "best of all" to me if you're using Munich as a base. They will be spent driving substantial distances in and out of a major city with plenty of traffic to see a lot of very touristy places. Salzburg and Hallstatt in one day will involve 6 hours of driving (or from the back seat passengers' perspective, 6 hours of imprisonment.)

I would instead try to keep the day trips shorter and to visit places less crowded with tourists; consider traveling on Day 4 to Regensburg or Nuremberg and basing yourselves there for 6 nights. Nuremberg is a fine city with a nice old town and good WW II options. You can day trip from either place to to the other. You can also day trip from either of those cities to Munich. From Nuremberg, day trips to Bamberg (UNESCO World Heritage old town) Wuerzburg (northern end of the Romantic Road, UNESCO WH Residenz palace,) Bad Windsheim (outstanding open-air museum) or to the artists village of Iphofen are all possible. From Regensburg you could day trip as mentioned into Munich and Nuremberg but also to lovely Passau or to Landshut.

Nuremberg:

Bamberg: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_3dR4G2ZZq...00/Bamberg.jpg

Iphofen: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...hofen_BW_1.jpg

Passau: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...a_080420_2.jpg

Day trips would be much cheaper and less trouble by train (Bayern Ticket day pass for 5) than by car. Transport between Prague and Nuremberg is inexpensive as well when pre-purchased. The Bayern ticket allows you to use inner-city transport as well:

Are you basing in Munich for Days 5-10? If so, like Fussgaenger writes, much of Day 8 might be spent in the car. The one-way drive from Munich to Hallstatt is almost 3 hours (and with the current construction, possibly more), so 6 hours of your day, at least, will be spent driving. Factor in the time to park and walk into Hallstatt (the city is pedestrian only); and to navigate Salzburg, park the vehicle, and sightsee, and your itinerary leaves little time for Hallstatt, let alone Salzburg.

Thank you all a lot! You certainly helped.

@Fussgaenger @fourfortravel @agedude

We're are thinking to do two bases in this area:

Salzburg and Munich each one for 3 nights.

And return to Prague from Salzburg, and maybe stop at Linz.
This way it would take a shorter drive to berchesgaten, salzburg and hallstat.

What do you think?
