Germany Christmas Markets - Koln, Heidelberg and ?

Still undecided about plans for a week in Germany in early December. DH and I are flying round trip from US to Frankfurt, arriving on a Sunday morning and departing the next Sunday.

We will do this trip by train and would like to spend two nights each in three cities.

We want to visit the Christmas markets - less about the shopping and more to enjoy the activities and ambience. Will plan to attend music events as possible for some of the evenings, some tourist sights during the day.

I would like to see Koln, primarily to visit the Dom and the variety of the markets. DH wants to visit Heidelberg.

Not sure what to select for our third city. Perhaps Nuremberg? Wurzburg? Bamburg?(We've visited Munich and Regensburg on a previous trip that included Salzburg and Vienna.)

Also, we plan to take the train directly to Koln upon arrival at the Frankfurt airport. And will spend our final Saturday night near the airport, so probably will visit the Frankfurt markets on Saturday evening.

I appreciate your critique and especially welcome your ideas on selection of our third city.

Thanks! SusanEva

Stuttgart has a beautiful Christmas market--very festive. Best booth decorations of all.

Thanks jinx & SusieC!

I think I'm leaning toward Nuremberg because of it's historic association with the markets.

SusieC, does your husband have specifics about why he recommends it?
