Germany by train

I am going to Germany at the end of May - flying into Berlin - and flying out of Frankfurt.
Will be spending 3 days in Berlin and 3 days in Frankfurt at the end so we have 4 days/nights between Berlin and Frankfurt. Will be travelling by train. Any suggestions of towns we could travel to. Maybe spend 2 nights in 2 different towns?
I am not looking for nightlife, just interesting small town with some character - nice pubs/restaurants and walks during the day.

Perhaps Quedlinburg? Or Marburg or any of dozens of places. You might get out a map and see what towns are in between and pick one of them.

While in Frankfurt, think about visiting Kronburg and its castle, Bad Homburg with the Saalburg and Hessen Park and Mainz.

Do go stroll through Höchst while there. This is the lovliest neighborhood of Frankfurt, containing street after cobblestoned street lined with half-timbered houses. Also one of the oldest original churches in Germany, the Justinus church, built in 850. Höchst sits on the Main river and the Alt Stadt sits on the old city walls and the dry moat of the Schloss. The Bolongaro Palace is also there, as well as the Höchst Porcelain factory, the 2nd oldest in Germany.

Hannoversch Münden, near Kassel and northeast of Frankfurt and the above-mentioned Marburg, is one of the most scenic towns in Europe. The half-timbered buildings there (700 of them) are just eye-popping. I walked around the town mesmerized, with my tongue dangling uncontrollably. I would at a minimum make a stop there along the way. Some photos; click through the pages:

Thanks Mainhattengirl and Russ - I have checked out your suggestions and have now made plans. It was really good to get a feel for places especially your links. You pointed me to places I would not have known about.
If you ever need suggestions on places in Ireland I hope I can return the advice. I am looking forward to my visit to Germany.

Russ, thanks for that link. Have bookmarked that for future references. Looks like a beautiful city to visit.

Here is a link for the Justinus Church in Höchst.

I like Büdingen too. Pretty little town with an intact city wall and castle. The video in the link is in German, but still interesting to watch.
