Germany: Best Month To Go

Going to Germany in 2012. As far north as Koln and south as Munchen. Which month to go May or September and reasons for each.
Thanks globetrotterjfc

I lived in Germany for 2+ years so have experienced both seasons. Both are great times to go; you will be outside of the high tourist season and about equal in terms of weather - of course you could get rain or sun at either time, but it is more likely to be a little bit warmer in September. May will have spring flowers and greenery; September will be too early for fall colors but you'll still have late summer lushness. For me it's a toss-up!

September, end in Munchen for the Oktoberfest! We went in 2007 for the first week of Oktoberfest and the weather was gorgeous, 75-80 degrees (F) every day. We went to Fuessen for the castles and the trees were turning, it rained and was cooler but still very nice.

May - the days will be longer. And I find locals are happier to see tourists early in the season rathr than late.

We prefer October to any other month, so I'd go with September.

Oops, that posted before I wanted it too some how...

Was going to say that I found locals to be great in late Sept/early Oct., but I haven't been in May.

I've been both and in Dec. Anytime is good for me. Was there in May this year and the weather could not have been better but next year, who knows?

September - in the south (Bamberg) you get Zwetschgendatschi (a kind of plum cake), in the Rheingau you get the Strausswirtschaften (seasonal taverns), and Zwiebelkuchen (onion tart) and Federweisser (the new season's white wine). Highly recommended - yum!

Hi globetrotterjfc,

Like hausfrau, I have lived in Germany for almost three years; I live in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, about 90 minutes south of München. I have to say that weather is really a crap-shoot, particularly in these days of climate change. This is what this year was like:

Jan-March was extraordinarily mild, with fall-like temps and really bad skiing.
April-June was extraordinarily mild and very, very dry, with summer-like temps
June-August was very cold with fall-like weather and some rain.
Mid-August to September has been a great summer.

So, really, there's just no way to tell for next year.

But I do like the weather in September, and I think I would gamble on that month.

I prefer mid to late May due to the much longer days.

Frankfurt
May 15
Sunrise 5:40am
Sunset 9:03pm, gaining 1-2min each subsequent day

Sept 15
Sunrise 7:00am
Sunset 7:42pm, dropping by 2-3 min each subsequent day.

Hi G,

Since this is your first visit, it won't matter.

Have a nice trip.
