Germany + Austria vs. Switzerland + Italy in August
Our trip to Italy in May is cancelled due to work schedule. Now we are hoping we can go in August (we know it's hardly the best time). We will have 10 to 11 nights arriving around August 21/22.
We would like to go somewhere that is not too hot. We are looking for relaxation and beautiful scenery. We do not mind renting a car to enjoy the small town experience.
So far, we are thinking of:
- Bavaria + part of Austria (using Munich as our gateway)
- part of Switzerland + Lake Como (using Zurich as our gateway)
Is any one of them a better choice than the other for August? Any other consideration when making our choices? Any specific towns to stay in in those areas?
Any other suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

If price is a consideration, check the airfares. Munich - at least on some routes - can be considerably cheaper as a gateway than Zurich.
You will have to move quickly to book some of these places (e.g. Lake Como) which are in peak tourist season in August, when many Europeans take their summer holiday.
On the other hand, are you into hiking the mountain trails? One advantage of travelling in July/August is that all the Swiss trails would be open.
Tell us a bit about your priorities and interests, this might help.

Sue, thank you for your reply.
We are looking for a relaxing holiday. We like to walk around, sightsee a bit, have a nice meal, ... not thinking of any serious hiking or special activities. We want time together in a beautiful place, doing nothing or almost nothing.
We are now leaning towards Bavaria + a bit of Austria around Salzburg but are wondering if there is any significant consideration in going to these places in August.
Please keep your suggestions coming.

If you like music, the Salzburg Music Festival runs in 2006 from July 24 to August 31. We went to the festival, quite a long time ago, enjoyed the concerts, and didn't feel the city was too crowded. I do remember booking the hotel way in advance, though I don't remember exactly how far in advance.
