Germany & Austria, need tips on the Mosel and Grossglockner Strasse

I'm looking for some help with our Germany and Austria itinerary. My husband and I have about 2.5 days on our own before picking up our friends at the Frankfurt airport. We travel at a fairly fast pace. I'm looking for suggestions especially for the Mosel region of Germany and the Grossglockner Strasse in Austria. So far we have hotel reservations in Rothenburg, Fussen, and Munich, suggestions on places to stay for the other areas would be appreciated. We usually like Rick Steve's type places that are less than $100 per night.
Thanks!
Anna

Here is our itinerary so far.
9/15 Arrive Frankfurt ~9:00AM, pick up car, head to Mosel Valley and then Trier

9/18 pick up friends at Frankfurt airport, drive to Rothenburg, spend 1 night.

9/19 drive Romantic Rd end up near castles, is it feasable to stop at Andech's monastery enroute?? Spend 2 nights near Fussen. Visit Neuschwanstein, Hohenschwangau, Linderhof, ride alpine slides.

9/21 Finish up in castle area, head toward the Grossglockner Strasse (any ideas where should we spend the night??)

9/22 Drive the Grossglockner Strasse, head to Hallstatt

9/23 Hallstatt

9/24 Salzburg

9/25 Munich, drop off car
OKTOBERFEST!!

9/28 pick up car again in Munich, head to Rhein, overnight in Bacharach

9/30 drop off car, fly home ;(

Anna, You want a place to visit on the Mosel? If so I would go to Trier. It is easily accessible to Bacharach. Trier has a large pedestrian area, and incredible Roman Ruins. The hotel I stayed at though is higher in price than your budget. BTW, if you are choosing the Steves recommended hotel in Bacharach called the Kranenturn(Spelling is wrong), be warned. The management is really edgy and when they say the trains are nearby they aren't kidding. Within inches of the windows! For someone from Calif. It felt and sounded like an approaching earthquake every 20 minutes. Impossible to sleep.

Anna,
Regarding your itinerary...you ask if it's feasible to visit Andechs on your way from Rothenburg to Fussen on the 19th. It's not; it would involve a lengthy detour. Consider this: when in Munich take the S-bahn line No. S5 to Herrsching from which you can pick up public transport or taxi to the monastery. When sampling the beer, be sure to also sample the monastery's Kloster cheese; goes well with the beer and is of the same high caliber.

In touring Upper Bavaria, don't fail to visit the Wieskirche near Steingaden, the monastery church in Rottenbuch and the Abbey at Ettal. Via Email I'm sending you a driving itinerary for the area; it's too lengthy to post here. The itineraries could start from any of the towns or villages mentioned in them. You may find some sights of interest that you hadn't considered.

We were in Hallstatt and Salzburg last Sept. In Hallstatt, we stayed at Pension Sarenstein (sp?), which was a Rick Steve's reccommendation. This was a very inexpensive old rambling guesthouse about 1/2 mile from the town center. It was an ideal location, and the rooms had the most spectacular view I've ever seen from a hotel room. On the minus side, Frau Fischer the owner is quite on in years, and is not able to keep the rooms in the best of condition. Lots of cobwebs, funky lamps, etc. If you are driving into Hallstatt, make sure you make arrangements to enter the town with your car. There is a gate across the road, and you may have to park above the town at the highway parking lot. Not fun, especially if you arrive at night (like we did!). In Salzburg, we stayed at the Golden Krone (sp?), a mediun sized, clean, inexpensive hotel in a great neighborhood, just across the river from the old city. We actually preferred the hotel's location to the more touristy old city spots.

From Frankfurt drive north down the Rhine to Koblenz, then take a left to go up the Mosel. This is a fairly ambitious drive, but doable in the 3 nights you have alloted. It's ambitious, because there is so much to see on both rivers, including several villages and a couple of castles. We drove from Trier to Oberwesel on a Sunday, and traffic was very heavy with many locals out having a Sunday drive. Took 5 hours or so, maybe longer.
In Trier check out Weinhaus Becker for a hotel, last I looked was under $100. It is up from the center of town, near the University, but with a car, not a problem. Parking avail right in front of the hotel. Rooms were clean, comfortable, very nice. Breakfast, included, was very good. The dinner was excellent, but a bit pricey, as it appears to be a special occassion type of place for the locals. You can find them at
www.lodging-germany.com/trier/weinhausbecker.htm
We alloted only an afternoon for the Mosel River drive, and it was not nearly enough. Have fun!
