Germany & Austria car trip help

So me and my girlfriend, both of us 32 years old, decided to visit Germany and Austria this summer. We planning about 2 weeks road trip using rental car and currently we thinking to Land in Munich, travel to Wurzburg and drive the romantic road to Fussen. Than continue to Austria and make a trip from Salzburg to Vienna.

We can do this sometime between the end to June to the end of July. Any suggestions about where to visit or stay for the night? Should I know something special about renting the car? Should I book places to stay in advance?

I also would like to hear if you have suggestions for the route itself or even if there are places worth to visit so we will change the route. For example, on the way from Salzburg to Vienna is it good idea to "cut" to the Czech republic and visit Český Krumlov?

Any advice can help.
Thanks

Look into www.kemwel.com for your car rental. Be aware that there are heavy cross-border crop-off fees; a circular tour might be the way to organize your trip.

correction: drop-off fees.

You might want to take a look at a guidebook just as Fodor's.

Hi,

If looking to drive the "Romantic Road", be aware that it's just a road that has a few nice old towns along it. Nothing special about "the road" itself. Rothenburg ob der Tauber is very popular.

That said, if you're looking at Wurzburg, I'd suggest flying into Frankfurt, head to Wurzburg, Rothenburg, Dinkelsbuehl and then down to Fuessen. Maybe add Garmisch or Mittenwald on the way to Salzburg and drop the car in Freilassing or Berchtesgaden, Germany, just over the Germany/Austria border by Salzburg. Then train/bus to Salzburg and then on to Vienna and fly home. This would aviod the big "drop off charge" incurred by renting in one country (Germany) and returning it in another (Austria).

For rental cars, we rent through Andy Bestor at www.gemut.com. For info on rental cars and driving in Europe, check out their excellent booklet at:

Paul has some good suggestions. We use Gemut.com also. Don't get the car till you are ready to leave Munich. Save the traffic and parking headaches. Don't pick up the car at a train station or airport in Germany to save a 19% surtax. We have a Garmin nuvi GPS that has European roads on it yhat we bring from home that is invaluable. We love Rothenburg, fussen (Schwangau) and the ara between there and Garmish. It includes the Wiesekirche, Oberammergau, Schlos Linderhof, Ettal Monastary, Garmish and 10 miles further on, the violin makers village, Mittenwald. When you head ovver to Salzburg swing by Bertschesgaded. When you are in Salzburg you are not too far (2-3hiurs) from Hallstadt and a little further down thw autobahn to Norther Italy and the Dolomites. Have a great trip.
