Germany & Austria. Daytrips ?
 

We will be staying 5 nights in Munich & 5 nights in Rothenburg. We are currently planning excursions to Berchesgarten, Nuremburg, Salzburg & Wurzburg (please excuse the spelling). Other favorites w/in close proximity ? Also considering Fussen & Chiemesee.

With 5 nights and 6 days in Munich, you should take 1/2 day a visit Dachau. A must! 20 minutes on the S-Bahn.

I'd suggest a trip from Munich south to Andechs Monastery. Pretty chapel, but you are going there mostly for the scenery, the ambiance, the traditional food, and of course, the monk-brewed beer. You can drive - but I liked taking the S-Bahn out to Herrsching and doing the hike up to the monastery from there (gorgeous views of Ammer Lake and even the Alps on a clear day), like many Germans do, which makes the food and grog all the more tasty.

The Abbey in Melk is amazing! My husband is the "seen one abbey, you've seen them all" type, but even he was excited by this one.

Will you be going to King Ludwig's castles? Everyone seems to like Neuschwanstein, but my favorite is Linderhof, it's a little jewel! You can see them both on a daytrip from Munich.

Another vote for Passau and the organ concert. I believe the organ is the largest in the world and if you want to attend the concert, get there early, tickets are limited. I'm pretty sure it's at noon rather than eleven, though.

Others ? We have done most of the 'river towns' west of Vienna (including Melk). Any info on these other locales I have mentioned ?

Bamberg is an absolute gem of a city. Not damaged in WWII and not as "touristy" as Rothenburg. The Regnitz runs right through the center of the city. A pope and an emporer are buried there. The Altstadt is well preserved. We stayed in a hotel right on the banks of the river with a direct view of the original city hall.

Where is Bamberg in proximity to Rothenburg ? I've heard of it but my geography is failing me.

Bamberg is northeast of Rothenburg--a 1 to 1-1/2 hour drive depending on your driving style. 2 or 2-1/2 hours by train depending on which train you take.

Wurzburg: The Residenz, the cappella

wuerzburg is worth a day, and probably easy by train. As stated by the previous message, the Residenz is great. Don't confuse it with the castle up high above the town (which is also worth going to. ) The Residenz is in the city, and worth the tour.

If you are going south of Munich to see Neuschwanstein-spend time in Fussen, and do not miss Linderhof Castle.Also agree that within a short distance of Nurnburg, Bamburg should not be missed. You don't say when you will be traveling, but in summer, Chiemse am Prien is lovely. After you have seen the other castles of King Ludwig-Herrenchiemsee should not be missed.

Traveling in April, we've seen the castles, but not Fussen. Since we have 5 days in each, I was planning two or 3 daytrips from each. Traveling w/a then 22 month old as well, who travels well. Based on the info Rufus provided Bamberg may be a tad farther than I would like for 1 day, but we'll see once I take a look @ the train schedules. Thanks to all.

Wurzburg would be a better base than Rothenburg which is at the end of a very slow train line. But then, I am of the opinion that 24 hours in Rothenburg is sufficient.

I agree with Michael about Rothenburg. If you want a base for day trips, Wurzburg would be better. I wouldn't skip Bamberg or Regensburg.

We got a great deal on an apartment there, hence Rothenburg. Wurzburg is on the list already although I'm still deciding on Regensburg. Those 2 & Nurnburg are all close by train. If we do Bamberg, I'll have to replace one of those. Plenty of time & we always seem to change on the fly anyway. You know what they say about the best laid plans...
