German Unity Day 10/3 - what goes on?

hi all -
I'll be in Germany on German Unification Day, October 3rd. We'll be driving from a weekend in Fussen back to our 'base' in Heidelberg that day. I'm wondering what happens on that holiday... should I expect shops and restaurants to be closed? Special events I should look out for? Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

This is a scary post.

If it's not a Troll post I'd say you should watch out for those bad Natzy boys because they are really tough.

If I'm wrong (you know what I mean. If the Natzys were not responsible for all those killings) then I'm sorry.

Have fun. They do have good beer.

Didn't mean to scare you - it's an honest question. i know 10/3 is a national holiday, but that's it. i assure you i am not a troll (or a moron). i will enjoy the beer. thanks.

What are "Natzy Boys"?

Yes, most shops will be closed. Restaurants will be open. There will be a few festivities going on, but nothing special between Füssen and Heidelberg (more in the big cities, esp. Berlin).

Thank you very much, Ingo.

lonesome,

October 3 has nothing to do with the "Natzy Boys". Germany was divided into East and West on October 3, 1949 and reunified on October 3, 1990. That is what Unification Day is about. The Berlin Wall came down in 1989.

Don't know for sure, but usually on
German holidays just about everything but the beer gardens and restaurants shut down.

One more thing. I just checked the calendar and October 3rd is on a monday. As you may know, just about everything closes on sunday. With the holiday monday, that will be two days in a row many businesses are closed. I suggest strongly that on saturday you stock up on essentials for the hotel room (booze, snacks, etc.), otherwise you will be paying premium to buy they from restaurants.
