My DH's relatives are sending some from Austria. I said thanks, but I am not sure what it is?

The two dots are an "umlaut".

Kernöl is pumpkin seed oil; highly prized amongst some cooks in Austria.

Thanks Ira. I wasn't sure why they were sending it to me. But I guess I raved over their cooking and so they thought they would send the secret ingredient?

I've had it most commonly on salads in Austria, although it may also have been used as a cooking oil.

Words with the ö can also be written as oe (ditto for ue & ae).

It is not used as a cooking oil - it doesn't respond well to heat, so just keep it for the salads etc...and don't spill it on your clothes!
