german question

What is kernol? Two small dots over the o.
My DH's relatives are sending some from Austria. I said thanks, but I am not sure what it is?

Hi G,

The two dots are an "umlaut".

Kernöl is pumpkin seed oil; highly prized amongst some cooks in Austria.

((I))

Thanks Ira. I wasn't sure why they were sending it to me. :) But I guess I raved over their cooking and so they thought they would send the secret ingredient? :)
thanks again

I've had it most commonly on salads in Austria, although it may also have been used as a cooking oil.

Here's everything you wanted to know but were afraid to ask.

Words with the ö can also be written as oe (ditto for ue & ae).

It is not used as a cooking oil - it doesn't respond well to heat, so just keep it for the salads etc...and don't spill it on your clothes!
