German-made watches
 

I would like to find a man's watch made entirely in Germany for a 40th wedding anniversary present for my husband. We are traveling to Germany in September to celebrate. I have researched watches and can not find any German brands, except with Swiss made insides. Does anyone know of any shops we could go to while visiting that specializes in German-made watches? (Our itinerary takes us from Frankfort down the Romantic Road to Munich and areas around Fussen.) Thank you in advance for your help.

A. Lange & Söhne

Perfect. There's a shop in Wurzburg where we are stopping. Also, they make mechanical rather than quartz, which is what my husband likes. This was the most important detail of our trip for me, so thank you very much.

Glashutte makes their own in house movements.

The name of the town where they're located is also Glashutte. That's where A. Lange & Sohne and some other German watchmakers are located as well.

WOW!!!! I just looked up the price of those Glashutte watches, and I could take a couple of trips to Paris for less.

That brings up another thought which is that while I understand wanting to buy one your trip, we've found it to be more expensive to buy in Europe vs from an authorized dealer in the US even when accounting for the VAT refund.

My husband tells me that a less expensive brand NOMOS http://www.nomos-glashuette.com/en/ makes their own movements as well.

If you want to keep the budget into the reasonable category, have a look to the Junghans Max Bill collection. Movements are not made in house, but watches are as German as they can be.

Another reputed firm, again not making their movements, is Stowa, but they sell mainly online (watches are made to order).

The point is that by buying outsourced movements you can keep prices down often without compromising quality. Only top firms selling at top prices build their own movements.

This is a lot of good information. I would prefer a company that makes its own movements, but I haven't checked any prices yet. I can't wait to ck all the websites for these watches (and ck the price difference btw countries). Thanks!

I did look up those watches, Patty, and for what some of them cost I could not only move to France, but also rent Versailles instead of an apartment.

Not all the watches are as expensive as A. Lange & Söhne or Glashütte Original.
