German Itinerary
Hello -- We are planning to travel to parts of Germany (among other places) in the Fall. During our time, I would like to spend a few days in Munich, drive up the Romantic Road to Rothenburg, and see the castles near Fussen. Would it be too long of a day to head down to the castles from Munich and then drive up to Rothenburg from there? Our next destination would be Salzburg. Does anyone know if there is a quick/easy route from Rothenburg to Salzburg? Thanks! This is my first time posting!

Yes too long not practical, especially since the Romantic Road is a two-lane truck-filled highway that can be tediously slow going. Consider going Munich to Rothenburg, next day Romantic Rd to Fussen, thenn next day drive from Fussen along the gorgeous Alpine Road to Garmisch and Berchtesgaden to Salzburg.

I agree with what Pal said. One of the issues you will face is tours through Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein are done on a by the minute by minute schedule. You will need to sync up you schedule with when you can get in. I'm sure you have looked at the map and discovered that Roithenburg is North, Fussen is Southeast and Salzburg is Southwest of Munich. Unless you are flying into Munich you may want to change the sequence.

Change that, Fussen is Southwest and Salzburg is Southeast. Also to consier are the other Ludwig castles around Bretschesgaden. Linderhoff and Herren Chiemnsee.

Interested in the comment about trucks on the Romantic Road. We drove it in June 2002 and it wasn't truck-filled then. Were we just lucky? The views along the road itself weren't all that interesting, but several of the towns were.
michelle--you're starting in Munich; where do you have to end up with your car? Back in Munich? |
Thanks everyone for the comments! We are starting in Munich (and flying into Munich). If we rented a car, though, we could probably return it elsewhere...
