German holidays in June?
I am trying to book accommodation in Bavaria for four nights in June. The first place I tried has responded that it's too bad I can't stay longer than 4 nights, as the period I have chosen, in early June, is high season and a German holiday.
Which holiday takes place around June 7th? Or could it be something more like half-term holidays? I wonder if Austria would be a better bet. |

German holidays in June? Posted by: pavot on Oct 24, 13 at 8:27am Which holiday takes place around June 7th? I wonder if Austria would be a better bet. </i> That would be Pentecost or Whit Monday, June 8. It's called Pfingstmontag in Germany. The same day is a holiday in Austria and a number of other countries. |
Pentecost and Whit Monday are the same everywhere. Whether they "celebrate" it or not with a bank holiday is the question.

Thanks; I'd forgotten how late Easter will be in 2014.
Do Germans have (or take) a week's holiday over Pentecost? I suppose I thought a 4-night stay was a decent amount of time to stay somewhere, but I guess I'd better be prepared for similar responses if accommodations can expect guests to stay for a week over that period. |
Not normally. It's just a long weekend; HOWEVER, some of the states have a Whitsun school break around then and many families take a short vacation then.

Thanks again. I really appreciate your help. I can see this is going to be tougher than I thought, but I have arranged the accommodation before and after these dates already; I'm going to have to find something, somewhere.

They tend to combine their vacation days with official holidays to give them more time for travel. Additionally, German offices typically close on "bridge" days. Those are Fridays after a Thursday holiday. The bridge days in spring 2014 are Corpus Christi June 19 and Ascension on May 29. |
Where in Bavaria were you looking?
|
I was hoping to stay somewhere near Garmisch-Partenkirchen. We'll be driving from France before this stay, and heading to Verona afterward.
We are hoping to see Neueschwanstein and do some hiking; this will be our first visit to Germany -- just a taste. |
You should have no problems finding a hotel room for just one or a few nights any time of the year.
Just some types of accomodation like holiday rentals, B&Bs, farm stays which rent by the night during low season switch to an x day minimum during high season. And as both states which border the Alps (Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg) do have Pentecost school breaks, it will indeed be high season for short week-long trips for many people from those states. So even while you may still find lots of vacancies for 1-x nights on hotel booking sites like hrs.com it may not be the time to expect many bargains. |
