German Alpine Road
 

Has anyone on the board driven the German Alpine Road? It starts near Friedrichshafen and ends near Salzberg. If you have, are there plenty of food/lodging options and what time of year would be the best for driving? Thanks in advance!

Yes, we've done it - in two steps: Lindau to Mittenwald, then on to Berchtesgaden a week later. Except for the very last stretch (after Ruhpolding), it was disappointing. I wouldn't say that there were "plenty of food/lodging options".

Yes I've done it. Very scenic, some pleasant stops (food etc), but oh, those trucks. It is frustrating to have such beautiful views blocked by the back end of a bloody great lorry that you can't pass because of the narrow road and oncoming traffic. Still, don't let that deter you from an otherwise enjoyable drive.

Of course we went by car and yes, we had lunch along the way each time. That was it. We were not on the lookout for food and lodging. The Road did not live up to our expectations, having traveled many more scenic routes in the Alps.

BTW, by definition, how can it be very scenic if one is passing "a restaurant every 3 minutes, a hotel/pension every 5."?

guess everyone has another definition of scenic. there are some guys that think Rothenburg or Heidelberg are nice pitoresc villages ... ;-). so I wasnt talking about hoe scenic it is. going by car means about 50 - 60 km/h. so You will pass a restaurant every 3 km (or sometimes - in a village - 5 in half a minute).

We took the road most of the time, and also used the autobahn. Maybr it was just us but we found i to be badly marked. We drove from Munich to Augsburg. We then drove to Partenkirchen. Stayed 4 nights in the Mercure, which we used as a base for the Zugspitz, Schloss Lindenhof, Ettal and Mittenwald.
Drove to Rosenheim, where we used it as a base to visit Schloss Herrenchiemsee.
From there we drove to Berchtesgaden.
We covered the places we wanted to visit.
There are towns and places to eat and sleep along the way. We just decided we felt the road was poorly marked that we would go our own way to the places we wanted. Many of the smaller roads have heavy traffic and if get behind a truck or tractor, it will make the trip too long. It took us 10 days from Augsburg to Landshut, near Munich and drop the car off at the airport. It was a great trip, my wife thinks it was one of the best we planned.
