German Accommodations (and Zurich)
 

My mother and I are spending 2 weeks in Germany in September. My mother lived there for several years when I was born (35+ years ago), so she has some experience (if her mind will recall it -ha!). We are visiting for the first time since I was 1 year old.
We would like some advice on accommodations.
Our parameters are: two beds (or two singles pushed together), bed & breakfast type (pensions) but are open to any German experience hotel, and air conditioning (if possible). Yes I know the background on the beds and a/c.
Here are the places we are staying overnight:
Wurzburg (my birthplace)
Munich
Berchtesgaden
Garmish
Zurich (fly out city)
Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated!

You could stay at the very posh, very expensive Baur au Lac, but it is tres snooty.

And I mean Ivana Trump Snooty, sweetie darling, and that is pretty darn snooty.

If you're getting into Zurich in the afternoon and flying out in the morning, then the easiest place to stay is the Radisson Blu at the airport. That's where I am staying with Mom in June when she flies back to Phila after her three week-visit with me. I've reserved an runway view room with late checkout, so if her plane is delayed, we can relax in the room and watch the other planes come and go. (Last year, her flight was delayed five hours and wandering around the shopping area got boring pretty quickly. It was pouring with rain so there was no point in leaving the airport.)

FWIW, I was in Zurich on Saturday and Bahnhofstrasse is under construction up and down the whole street. You can still get to most stores (a few are also being remodeled), but it doesn't look like its usual self.

It would be helpful if you could give us your price preference for your hotels to help us narrow down our recommendations.

I doubt you'll find many hotels offering air conditioning in most parts of Germany -- it's usually not necessary except for a few weeks in August, and then folks just open the windows. I think it would be better to look for a hotel in a quiet area so that you won't be disturbed when the windows are open.

In Garmisch, there are tons of pensions, and there are a few hotels I've recommended to others. I have recommended the 3-star Hotel Bavaria for its ambiance and its wonderful location, and it seems to get good reviews at Trip Advisor. I live in Garmisch, though, and haven't stayed at a hotel here. You can find all the pensions at the town's central website at

$180-200/night or less (preferably) is our budget.

Actually, Pension St, Josef is a well located hotel (near Old Town Zurich) at a reasonable price. You might prefer a room off the street side for quiet. Also, it is good to know to look for the ramp (walk past the hotel as you approach from train station) to roll your luggage up to the hotel rather than attempt the stairs. Walkable from the train station. They will also arrange airport transportation if you don't want to use the train (which it also pretty easy).
